I tuned in late to the ~~GOP~~ Clown fest on CNN last night, but not too late to hear a conversation that went on for what seemed like an eternity about the MOON of all subjects!! No, not a conversation about jobs and the economy, THE MOON, and how Newton wants to inhabit it, yes, colonize it with 13,000 residents, I shit you not!....Newt:."By the end of my second term [2020], we will have the first permanent base on the moon and it will be American," he told a cheering crowd in Cocoa, Florida, a town with links to the space industry. Pandering to Floridians by talking about a Space Program! "I want you to help me in Florida and across the country so you can someday say you were there the day it was announced that we’d have commercial space, moon colony and moving toward Mars. Cheers? because Newt thinks he'll be president for 8 yrs, or because he and his party will be headed out in space and never come back? It's too good to be true...

The country is moving forward, the economy is improving, jobs numbers are up, the debt and deficit are still a problem, but the Newt has HUGE government intrusive plans to spend, according to experts, 100 billion to put Americans in condos on the MOON! Would the Newt talk like this in North Dakota or Oregon? No, he's a pig who criticizes Big Government spending and then turns around and spews this insane shit, and his followers CHEER.....I can't believe we are even discussing this...

What a night, the only good thing about it was Barack Obama was the winner again..

Speaking of winners, the President and Democrats are steadily rising in the polls. An NBC/WSJ poll showed voters want a Democratic Congress, not a Republican one, by 6 percent (47 percent to 41 percent). This lead is double the advantage Democrats had in the last NBC/WSJ survey from December.

On Tuesday, a National Journal poll found that 48 percent of voters prefer Democrats to take control of the House while 37 percent want Republicans to stay in control. In October, the same poll showed a statistical tie.

In January of 2010 before taking the majority, Republicans led in an NPR poll by 5 percent and by 3 percent in a CNN poll.
This week, former NRCC Chairman Tom Davis said that Democrats could retake control of the House and last week former RNC Chairman Michael Steele admitted the same.

Aaaah lovely, my predictions will come true, I can feel it....Barack Obama will win in November and Democrats will take back the House. Republicans are making sure this all happens, every time they open their stupid mouths...

Tonight President Obama will give his third State of the Union Address, I will be in front of my TV watching, so will at least one GOP Congressman, Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., maybe 2, because they "don't (BOOFUCKINHOO) agree with the Obama agenda" and "This is just another campaign speech to bash the GOP", so they are not attending. Just who do these GOP'ers think they are impressing by boycotting this special night for OUR president and OUR country? The couple of fistfulls of rightwing haters? Wow, how mature, So cool to disrespect the office of the presidency...

How many times have you heard a conservative say "Obambie ran on uniting the country and all he's done is divide us"!! As far back as you can remember has there ever been a president whose own party turned on him because he spent toooooo much time kissing the ass of the other party??? This has been Barack Obama, pragmatist, reaching across the isle, bending over backwards to please the GOP who kicked him in the balls every single time!! This president HAS tried with everything he has to be a uniter, YOU would not allow it to happen. This kind of strategy takes time. And it means there are long stretches when Obama seems incapable of defending himself, or willing to let others define him, or simply weak. He did the same thing during the campaign against Hillary Clinton and his strategy won out in the end.

If I sound biased, that’s because I am. Biased toward the actual record, not the spin; biased toward a president who has conducted himself with grace and calm under incredible pressure, who has had to manage crises not seen since the Second World War and the Depression, and who as yet has not had a single significant scandal to his name. “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle,” George Orwell once wrote. The New York Times‘ Charles Blow was disturbed enough to post a column at 2:30am that begins:

That’s the way I like to spend my Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: watching Newt Gingrich sneer at Juan Williams, a black man, for having the temerity to ask him if his condescending remarks about the work ethic of poor black people are indeed condescending[.]

Let’s start with Gingrich’s claim that “New York City pays their janitors an absurd amount of money because of the union.”
Both PolitiFact and FactCheck researched that last month and, not surprisingly, Gingrich is wrong. Yes, the starting pay for a custodial engineer is $55,625. But that is Gingrich’s “Master Janitor” position, a supervisory job that involves “hiring, training and supervising custodial staff; doing payroll; and maintaining and doing minor repairs to HVAC, boilers and plumbing.” Starting cleaners make only $15.77/hour, rising to $18.13/hour after two years.
Gingrich said the city could “hire 30 kids to work in the school for the price of one janitor.” The cleaner position is full-time, say 40 hours totaling $725.50/week. Divide that by 30 students, and it works out to $24/week per student. If each worked three hours a day after school, five days a week, each would be paid $1.60/hour. If that sounds familiar, perhaps that’s because it was the minimum wage when you got your first job … forty years ago.
Gingrich then revived his “food stamp president” rhetoric and, when challenged, doubled-down:

The fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history. Now, I know among the politically correct you are not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.

Never mind that President Obama inherited the Great Recession, caused by policies Gingrich advocated as Speaker in the 1990s. Never mind that two-thirds of food stamp recipients are white, that almost half are working, or that Gingrich opposes raising the minimum wage to help working Americans buy their own food.

Never mind any of that, because Gingrich’s answer wasn’t really about the minimum wage or school janitors or poverty. It was about turning white Americans’ frustration against black and brown Americans, so they won’t ask why Gingrich would give an average tax break of almost $2 million per year to the top 0.1% … and only $100 per month to average working Americans.

Dr. King would have asked that question. So should we all.

Lets start with this... Jennifer Rubin writes in the Washington Post ..Santorum is no extremist, in reality he has come to be seen as a practical politician rather than an ideological zealot. REALLY Jennifer?

Well let's take a look at the Santorum agenda if he should become the Jesus candidate...

One of Santorum's quotes: “One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be. [Sex] is supposed to be within marriage. It’s supposed to be for purposes that are yes, conjugal…but also procreative. That’s the perfect way that a sexual union should happen…This is special and it needs to be seen as special.”

Santorum believes sex should be between one man and one woman, they need to be married first, and use NO birth control!

Santorum wants to take away your right to fuck whomever you damn well please in the privacy of your home! And don't be nasty, I mean 2 consenting adults.... Outlawing birth control?? No wonder he was endorsed by the Duggar family with their 19 children! Next he'll be outlawing masturbation because sperm washed down the shower drain means dead babies...and what about hysterectomies? All those lost eggs from the womans ovaries!! That's criminal!

Rick Santorum hates gays. He claims he doesn't, but you can tell he is repulsed by gay sex. In fact I think he is obsessed with gay sex, any sex for that matter! He says the US Federal Government has the power to outlaw homosexuality, and to enforce that law by federal law enforcement, dragging alleged gays before a federal court to sentence them to prison for the crime of committing homosexual acts. So how would he do this, by outlawing our privacy? He says the right to privacy doesn't exist in the Constitution. So therefore your individual freedom means nothing to him, all he cares about is banning homosexuality because it's destroying the basic unit of our society! Man, woman, and a shitload of kids, this is his America!

Like all Teapublicans, Santorum believes the liberals (actually Gays) are indoctrinating our children. Santorum:“Let’s look at what’s going to be taught in our schools because now we have same sex couples being the same and their sexual activity being seen as equal and being affirmed by society as heterosexual couples and their activity. So what is going to be taught to our people in health class in our schools? What is going to be taught to our children about who in our stories, even to little children — what are married couples? What families look like in America? So, you are going to have in our curriculum spread throughout our curriculum world view that is fundamentally different than what is taught in schools today? Is that not a consequence of gay marriage?”
See? Sex pervert, it's all consuming...

Here's a good one, Santorum says the government has the right to limit people from pursuing their dreams. He disagrees with the idea that states don't have the right to limit individuals wants and passions. He believes they do have the right because there are consequences to letting people live out whatever wants or passions they desire. HUH?? Is this about more sex?

Santorum, today, called for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, BENEFITS CUTS! He thinks by saying this he will garner support from the people? WOW! Now we are seeing some real stooooopid... He supports the Ryan budget plan too, “ I think it’s the right direction on the major points. I can’t say I’ve read all of it, but on the major thrust of what he’s doing, I support what he wants to do with Medicare, Medicaid. The only thing I would do, frankly, as I’ve said publicly many times, I think we should implement a lot of these things sooner than what he’s suggesting.” What he's saying is, his plan is to kill Medicare and Medicaid...

I guess you get the idea, this man is dangerous. I don't believe for a minute he can beat President Obama if he should get the GOP nomination, but it is our job to highlight the stoopid and the dangerous...

Speaking of stupid, I unfortunately got involved in a conversation on Facebook with a couple of teabagger Obama haters...this woman was amused by a posting that said Obama has no heart, brains, or balls....here is her comment,

Mary, love your great posts! I couldn't agree more! I can't believe anyone would want 4 more years of this crap! It amazes me that some people can be so taken by this man who has done nothing but bring this country down. Chancellor Merkel of Germany described President Obama as the most "inconspicuous world leader I have ever met. He carries none of the pomp or prestige of the office and instead treats it as the most important job in the world, not for himself but for the citizens he serves and represents. The Righties like to say President Obama is the worst president in our history, that he has done nothing positive since taking office, that he has been a failure....dream on haters!!

One of the worst GOP'ers to attack the president is Mitt Romney. He loves calling President Obama a failure, Romney's just another rightwing hypocrite. So while he condemns Obama for spending to get us out of a depression, he has amnesia when it comes to Ronald Reagan and his spending which was around the 25% level as compared with the GDP into his second year in office. The tough economic times Reagan experienced and the spending he was forced to do was all fine and dandy with people like Romney, but for President Obama the spending is killing us and we MUST make sure Obama is a one termer before he destroys us completely! What a hypocrite!

Reagan was a God to the GOP, and Obama is a failure....BOTH presided over a period when federal spending reached roughly 25% of the GDP...

When I was around 12 yrs old my religious fanatic Dad took Christmas away from his 6 children, my submissive and scared Mom said nothing.. My little sister and brother were just 5 and 6 yrs old! Their whole childhood was spent with NO Santa, No Christmas tree, No presents! At least I had Christmas up until I was 12....

It was a Pagan holiday Dad says....along with Easter, Halloween, ...But Christmas??? I was so embarrassed I hid it from my friends, never letting them come inside to see my "presents". What would they think, There was nobody like my Dad in our neighborhood! That was 44 yrs ago...it did not rub off on any of us kids, one by one each of us left home, married, and had Christmas....

Hope everyone has a Happy New Year celebration! I'll be sitting home with a sick husband...he is so sick and on top of that he quit smoking 6 days ago. It's been just as hard on me if ya can believe that! :) No, he does not think that is funny...damn, the guy is one miserable son of a bitch and I'm gonna need the wine leftover from Christmas plus beer to get thru this night! He's complaining about the TV programing, the food we don't have, my cooking, anything and everything! He wants pancakes for breakfast cuz he hates my fried eggs, I can't cook an egg to save my life, never could he says...Well sorry buddy, we have NO pancake mix! I was told to order a pizza because my hamburgers are not juicy, or something to that effect....oh well, pizza, beer, wine, chips, dip, cheese, crackers, and a crabby old man...Happy New Year to ME!! :) AND TO YOU!!

I have missed all of you!
We laid Mom to rest yesterday, it was cold and rainy, but the service was very nice. I held it together for Amelia's sake, she has seen enough crying in her short life and I didn't want her to see me cry that day....she didn't know why we were there, she was just looking forward to a "party" with her cousins! She hasn't asked about Mimi and why her stuff is all packed up in her room, she just looked around today and on the wall where Mom's teddy bear shelf used to hang ...she asked if she could have the little hot air balloon with the tiny dog hanging from it in his tiny basket...I think my sister made it years ago and Mom treasured it, now Amelia will treasure it...She's been running through the house playing with it all day, not a care in the world. I'm so thankful I have her to make me laugh and smile every day! Kim and Drew found a house to rent right up the street from me, so the little turd will be at Gamm Gamms all the time! :)

2012 is gonna be a BIG year huh?? Already gearing up to be a landslide victory for President Obama! That's my prediction, you can bet on it! I'm not here to talk politics, just wanted to check on everybody and assure you I will be back in rare form for the new year, reading all your terrific blogs and doing some ranting of my own!

This IS a tax cut that will stimulate the economy and eventually pay for itself....But tax the billionaires?? Are you insane?? How can you raise taxes on the super wealthy in a slow economy?? Sadly people still fall for it...

Tuesday, December 6th, President Obama will be visiting the state of my birth, Kansas. He'll be in Osawatomie, Kansas channeling Teddy Roosevelt ...

A little over 100 yrs ago Roosevelt went to Osawatomie for the dedication of the city's John Brown Memorial Park. His speech was named the New Nationalism Speech. Actually it was 2 yrs after he left the White House that he gave this famous speech extolling the governments role in promoting social justice and regulating the economy to help the underprivileged. Republicans back then were as stubborn as they are today, well some will argue that point, but back then Roosevelt criticized the R's for refusing to tackle the economic power of the wealthy. Full circle everybody...full circle... ....here is the New Nationalism Speech he gave ....

It really troubles me when the left joins hands with the haters on the right to find fault in every single thing President Obama has tried to accomplish for us these past 3 yrs. They say he is not a leader, he has not fulfilled the promises he made to his base, the economy is the presidents fault because of his lack of leadership...But what I see is a man with great passion for the struggling people of this country and this is why he wanted to be president. We could be on much stronger footing economically speaking if the R's didn't fight tooth and nail every piece of legislation to help the middle class and working poor. I'm tired of saying it but it's the truth... Barack Obama is NOT the evil, arrogant, get down and dirty president the Right loves in their candidates, like Newt Gingrich for instance, get over it people...

So now on Tuesday President Obama will once again take it to the people, this time to a RED State, a state full of religious righties, pro-lifers, racists, haters of the Democratic party and everything liberals stand for...I can say that cuz I have a few relatives who live there and can back up my claim and many who ARE those conservatives ;)....

This all looks sleazy to me, and not because I'm jealous of a wingnuts fortune. THIS, PLUS 11 more reasons Newt Gingrich CAN NOT be President of these Great United States, as written by Kelly Vote Obama-Johnson, a Facebook friend and fellow Liberal who supports President Barack Obama 100%!!

1. Multiple Marriages- One of the biggest issues with Newt Gingrich is that he has married three times. In the past, this may not have mattered but right wing voters, especially the religious ones, may have a problem with this. This will hurt Newt Gingrich and if the religious right backs him it will be a huge show of hypocrisy. But if you think Newt’s multiple marriages is a reason not to vote for him, you should read why he’s been married multiple times in the first place.

2. Infidelity- Newt Gingrich is trying to paint himself as a family values candidate, but that’s just not going to fly. He’s been married three times and he cheated on the first two. While his first wife was being treated for cancer, Newt served her the divorce papers while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery. Apparently he left her because “She isn’t young enough or pretty enough to be the President’s wife.” Then he carried on an affair even while attempting to impeach President Bill Clinton for his own affair. If that’s not hypocrisy, I don’t know what it. He then left wife number two for the younger woman he was having the affair with.
‎3. Deadbeat Dad- Newt has at least one thing in common with Joe Walsh. They’re both deadbeat dads. It took a court of law to force Gingrich to pay utility bills to keep the electricity running for his kids. That should kill his chances with anyone who values family and children.
4. Health Care Mandate Hypocrisy- Did you know Newt Gingrich supported a health care mandate similar to the one signed into law by President Obama? Well, you know now. Newt has always been a fan of health care mandates, so it was perplexing to hear him condemn the mandate when Democrats passed one.
5. Government Shutdown- Newt Gingrich is also a big fan of government shutdowns. When Republicans captured the House in the 1990s, Newt and the GOP decided to put the country at risk and actually shut the government down in an attempt to hurt Bill Clinton. So, let’s say Newt becomes President and Democrats control Congress. What stops Gingrich from shutting government down by refusing to sign critical budgets? The answer: nothing. And with the current economic state, Newt is a gamble we can’t afford.
‎6. Freddie Mac Payouts- For three years, Gingrich has blamed Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae for the economic meltdown in 2008. He has also called for putting Chris Dodd and Barney Frank in prison for being affiliated with them. Well, it turns out Newt was a highly paid strategic advisor for Freddie Mac during the years of the housing bubble. Gingrich reportedly made $1.6 million during that time.
7. Confederate Sympathizer and Racist- Gingrich has a fascination with the Confederacy and has fantasized about the South winning the Civil War. He even wrote a book in which the South wins Gettysburg. He’s also a racist. Throughout President Obama’s first term, Gingrich has used code to disguise racist remarks. He has continually referred to President Obama as a Kenyan, and the “food stamp President.” It’s not very Presidential at all.

Draft Dodger- Gingrich supports further war in the Middle East, especially with Iran, and has criticized how President Obama has waged the war against terrorism, despite the fact that under the Obama administration, several high level terrorists including Osama Bin Laden have been killed. But, you should definitely think twice about voting for Newt because he has never served a day in the military. During Vietnam, Gingrich avoided the draft by getting a graduate school deferment even though he supported the war. That’s right, apparently the chicken hawk considered himself too smart to die for his country.
9. Fiscal Irresponsibility- It’s funny how Newt considers himself a fiscally responsible conservative, especially when he has a personal spending problem. During his tenure in the House, Gingrich was involved in a banking scandal while in office in which he bounced 22 checks including a $9,000 check to the IRS. And let’s not forget that Tiffany’s bill.
10. ‘Contract On America’- Gingrich was the main architect of the Contract With America, which Bill Clinton dubbed the ‘Contract On America.’ The contract includes many of the current schemes Republicans support now including a balanced budget amendment which would basically force America to live under conservative rule, lower taxes on corporations, perhaps as low as an anemic 12%, and the slow death of Medicare and Social Security. Gingrich would bring all of that with him to the White House and would likely throw the full weight of the Oval Office behind each measure along with abortion bans, laws against homosexuality, increased oil drilling, and increasing the outsourcing of jobs.

‎11. Big Ego And Arrogance- Most Americans want a humble man to be their President. Newt Gingrich doesn’t have a humble bone in his body. Throughout his career, he has had a giant ego and a whole lot of arrogance. Gingrich once whined about not being allowed to exit Air Force One from the same door as President Clinton. Gingrich had to exit from the rear of the plane, which is where everyone but the President, his family, and foreign leaders exit from. Gingrich, in his arrogance, believed himself privileged enough to warrant the Presidential exit. Gingrich is also egotistical when describing himself.

Social Security did not create the debt problem!

For the Super Committee to take SS benefits and Medicare benefits cuts off the table is NOT cowardice like WaPo claims it is. Proposition 26 might even open the door to investigating women who have suffered miscarriages. This is scary folks....this is NOT my America!!

But this is a new low even for the despicable Limpy as he blasted President Obama's decision to send 100 troops to Uganda to stop(capture/kill) the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army so it could collapse, thus saving tens of thousands of African men, woman, and especially children.....

Midge Hough--- Why she became an Activist

Midge Hough is a Facebook friend. We've been friends for just about a month :). I sent her a friend request when I discovered she was from a town in NJ not far from me, and she accepted. I stumbled upon this beautiful story, a sad chapter in her life which led to her activism. I am proud of her and her fight for affordable healthcare for ALL Americans not just the "chosen" few. This touching piece was written by David Phillips and published in Addicting Info.
Midge and I thank you for reading...

I met Midge Hough in the most modern of ways, on a Facebook thread. Midge was involved in an increasingly heated discussion, amongst progressives, about Obama’s lame duck tax compromise with Republicans that traded an extension of the Bush tax cuts for a long-term extension of unemployment benefits (among other things). Posters on the thread were mad as hell. But Midge kept defending the decision by looking at the bigger picture. She knew what would happen to those unemployed folks if the President didn’t make this deal. I chimed in on the thread and took her side immediately. Shortly after, I requested her friendship on Facebook. By the morning, I had written an article based around the idea of the back and forth from the night before and my fervent belief that Obama was getting the short end from liberals. I passed it along to Midge who pushed it with all her might on her own page.
I guess you could say we liked each other right away.

Of course, this was merely a first impression. But as Midge and I continued our increasingly frequent correspondence, she began to open up and tell me her story. We all have a story, but the tale of how Midge went from a modestly active progressive to that of a fervent activist is both a tragic and extraordinary one.
This is the road that she was at first forced to take, but has now learned to embrace.

It began with the pregnancy of her daughter-in-law, Jenny Fritts.
Like many young couples during the financial downturn, Jenny and her husband were facing hard times. They had both lost their jobs and one could argue the last thing the two of them needed was the additional burden that having another child creates (they already had a 2 year old girl). They did not plan to get pregnant, but pregnant they became and now had a decision to make.
It wasn’t a tough one. They decided to keep the baby and face the potentially sobering challenges ahead…together. It was a brave choice, made with realism and a full understanding of their less than ideal circumstances.
They wanted this baby.

During her third trimester, Jenny began to feel ill. Lacking any health insurance, Jenny was taken to the ER, diagnosed with a ‘cold’ and exhaustion and then treated (poorly) and sent home. It is a practice known as ‘dumping’: a sad, often unspoken, policy which doctors follow when seeing someone with a potentially expensive condition who does not appear to have the means to pay. The minimum amount of service is provided and maybe a ‘best of luck’ on the way out the door.
Jenny did not have the best of luck.

Less than 24 hours after being told she had a ‘cold,’ Jenny was back in the ER with a diagnosis of double pneumonia, septic shock, and respiratory failure, this time at a different hospital. She would soon be placed on life support.
She spent exactly 55 days at this largely inadequately resourced non-profit hospital. In that time she developed blood clots, a brain bleed, followed by a stroke and a heart attack. During the majority of this time Jenny was not unconscious, she knew exactly what was happening to her; think of that. At one point, her condition deteriorated so much that she could not be laid flat to be transported from one room to another simply for tests; every time they tried, she would code.

The Houghs tried, multiple times, to move Jenny to a more advanced hospital. However, none would
accept the transfer. They had waited for 52 days for the hospital to get a portable respirator that would breathe for her so she could be transported to undergo further testing. By the time it arrived, it was too late; 3 days later, on August 26, 2009, Jenny died.

Her baby girl was delivered stillborn by induced labor on day 32. The stress on her mother was more than she could bear. The child had died inside of her 10 days earlier, when Jenny had her heart attack. The doctors were forced to wait the extra week and a half, before delivery, to allow Jenny to recover (as much as possible) from her heart trauma. Midge and her son were able to hold the tiny little girl before committing her to memory.
For 32 days this courageous young woman fought to bring her child into the world despite inadequate care and facilities. For 23 more days she clung to life in the face of any sensible prediction. After all, she had another child to come home to. She suffered in ways that are unimaginable. There are no appropriate metaphors to describe what Jenny and her family went through. How could Hell be worse than this?
To watch this sweet young girl go from a healthy mother to be to that of a helpless witness to her own, and her baby’s, demise is unconscionable. Now, imagine that all you could do was watch. What must that have been like? Do any of us want to consider the horror of this? Would we ever want to walk a foot, let alone a mile, in the shoes of the Houghs? I sure as hell don’t.

For quite a while, Midge felt lost and in a haze. She attended a candlelight vigil in Grant Park for the fight to reform health care one week after Jenny’s death. The photo at the beginning of the article is from that day. The home-made poster she was holding of Jenny was created to give the cost of our health care system a human face. Despite the efforts of many a reporter to get a quote from her, Midge was not yet strong enough to speak.

She began to write about her experience on Facebook, she found it therapeutic. The support she received from the virtual community–from people she had never met–encouraged her. One week later she found her voice at a protest against Big Insurance (BCBS) in downtown Chicago. There, she gave her first interviews; action groups asked for pro-reform videos, which she completed the following week. She then hit every media outlet that was willing to make itself available to her.
Through this devastating ordeal, she had found purpose.

She spoke with Illinois Governor, Pat Quinn, and the senior Senator from Illinois, Dick Durbin; she was a featured guest on the “Ed Show” and even Al-Jazeera. Her story had reached beyond the personal and became a heartrending national example of our failed health care system. The video became so popular on YouTube that it temporarily crashed the site.

She also began to speak at rallies. Despite her own nervousness over talking in front of a large crowd, Midge found that once she began to speak, “It just takes you.”
Her reception at these events was not always cordial. At one town hall in Oak Lawn, Illinois, she was the guest speaker of Democratic Congressman, Dan Lipinski (whom she came to thank for his support of HCR, but would ironically vote ‘no’ when the measure came to the House floor). Things turned grim after she took the microphone; the Tea Party had arrived. Here is what happened:

After all she had been through, Midge had become a target, in particular, by a satellite division of the Tea Party known as The Chicago Tea Party Patriots. They ridiculed her story, accused her of making it up, and of lying about the deaths of her daughter-in-law and her grandchild. The story became so well-known for its lack of decency, that it actually made Keith Olbermann’s ‘Worst Persons in the World’ segment on Countdown. The video of Keith defending the Houghs was nearly as well-viewed as the piece from The Ed Show.

What fascinates me here is, not just the willingness of these ‘patriots’ to disparage and, quite honestly, make shit up about a woman who had suffered a tremendous loss, but the fact that they simply skirted over the simple truth that Jenny chose NOT to have an abortion even though it could have been argued as being a more ‘practical’ decision. Jenny chose life, and in a terrible twist of fate, she received the opposite. You would think that Tea Party Patriots would applaud such a decision as it fits into their own ideology. But the truth is, they don’t give a shit about people like Jenny. The unborn child? Maybe. The mother and the family of said child? Not at all. But who brings that unborn child into the world? Is it not the mother, and the doctors and nurses in the health care system? A system that didn’t just kill Jenny, but her daughter too.

Despite this sort of treatment from the Chicago wing of the Tea Party Patriots, Midge soldiered on.
She fought hard for the Health Care Reform Bill. She continued to speak at rallies and town halls regardless of the lack of respect shown to her by some of the attendees. Jenny’s story was read by Durbin on the Senate floor during the health care battle and again later by Illinois Congresswoman, Jan Schakowsky, on the floor of the House after the bill was passed.

She created an activist website, Progressive Citizens for America. Her husband also created a site to directly respond to the dishonesty of the Tea Party Patriots as well. She didn’t stop; not when it was brutally hard, and not when it would have been much easier to do so. Like Jenny, she didn’t stop.

When the Affordable Care Act was finally signed into law by President Obama on March 23, 2010 Midge, like many progressives, found it to be a bittersweet experience. She would have loved Medicare for everyone, but didn’t believe that it was possible. She was more than a little disappointed about the lack of a public option. But she believed what was passed was better than what we had before, and could be built upon. However, unlike most progressives (or almost anyone else for that matter), she had experienced a personal tragedy extraordinarily rare and indicative of the porous state of health care in this country. As Midge pointed out to me, this bill would have saved Jenny’s life from the pitfalls of living with the pre-existing condition known as pregnancy; and that was good enough for now.
As she said, “People think they know what they would do. But once you enter the maze (of the health care system), you have no idea.”
Midge knows this better than anyone I have ever met. Her life was forever changed by those 55 days. Her husband stands with her, her son battles a debilitating depression, there is a little girl who will never know her mother, and another who never knew life outside of the womb. None of this ended with Jenny’s death. It is a scar and a haunt that will dog these good people for the rest of their lives.
But Midge will not stop. She continues to fight for advancements to the way we treat the sick and the elderly in this country. She fights for the rights of organized labor, the middle class, and the less fortunate. She gives a voice to the voiceless.
She is my friend and I am all the better for it.
Midge told me that she still feels raw when she thinks of another young girl facing what Jenny went through. As she put it, “I do it all in her name.”
I would disagree with her slightly, she does it in all of our names. Even the ones she will never know.

That's right, the Obama jobs bill will be cut into understandable bits and pieces because GOOPERS don't seem to grasp the whole bill and what it will do for the unemployed....so the little jobs bill portion the would have given 35 billion for states to hire additional teachers, police, firefighters,(Most of these lost jobs are because of GOP govs.) and save jobs too, 400,000 of them. But, the bill was killed by the WHOLE REPUBLICAN SENATE MORONS and 3 Democratic morons...Why did it die you ask, because the GOP COULD NOT vote yes on a 0.5% tax increase on people earning more than $1 MILLION a year! Isn't that hilarious?!

The Republiscums say ALL THE TIME, "Now is not the time to raise taxes on anybody". WaaaWaaa!! I don't have to explain how the economy grew by leaps and bounds when Clinton raised taxes on the wealthy, do I? We all know the story... If the Republicans continue down this road of killing jobs bills because they can not raise taxes on their rich friends, the number of Americans turning on them will move from 65% to 99% in no time. If all America votes next yr. it could be a complete sweep for Dems, the country is FED UP!!

Republicans do not know how to govern so they use the excuse small government works best. On 17 December the Supreme Court rejected city and state appeals of Browder v. Gayle and ordered Montgomery's buses desegregated. Three days later, when the court order arrived by mail, the MIA held two mass meetings to formally call the bus boycott to an end and prepare for the next day when the protesters returned to the buses. After several weeks of nonviolent training sessions, King and Glenn Smiley prepared these guidelines for mass distribution.

This is a historic week because segregattion on buses now been declared unconstitutional. Within a few days the Supreme Court Mandate will reach Montgomery and you will be re-boarding integrated buses. This places upon us all a tremendous responsibility of maintaining, in face of what could be some unpleasantness, a calm and loving dignity befitting good citizens and members of our Race. If there is violence in word or deed it must not be our people who commit it.
For your help and convience the following suggestions are made. Will you read, study and memorize them so that our non-violent determination may not be endangered. First, some general suggestions:

1. Not all white people are opposed to integrated buses. Accept goodwill on the part of many.
2. The whole bus is now for the use of all people. Take a vacant seat.
3. Pray for guidance and commit yourself to complete non-violence in word and action as you enter the bus.
4. Demonstrate the calm dignity of our Montgomery people in your actions.
5. In all things observe ordinary rules of courtesy and good behavior.
6. Remember that this is not a victory for Negroes alone, but for all Montgomery and the South. Do not boast! Do not brag!
7. Be quiet but friendly; proud, but not arrogant; joyous, but not boistrous.
8. Be loving enough to absorb evil and understanding enough to turn an enemy into a friend.

NOW FOR SOME SPECIFIC SUGGESTIONS:

1. The bus driver is in charge of the bus and has been instructed to obey the law. Assume that he will cooperate in helping you occupy any vacant seat.
2. Do not deliberately sit by a white person, unless there is no other seat.
3. In sitting down by a person, white or colored, say "May I" or "Pardon me" as you sit. This is a common courtesy.
4. If cursed, do not curse back. If pushed, do not push back. If struck, do not strike back, but evidence love and goodwill at all times.
5. In case of an incident, talk as little as possible, and always in a quiet tone. Do not get up from your seat! Report all serious incidents to the bus driver.
6. For the first few days try to get on the bus with a friend in whose non-violence you have confidence. You can uphold one another by a glance or a prayer.
7. If another person is being molested, do not arise to go to his defense, but pray for the oppressor and use moral and spiritual force to carry on the struggle for justice.
8. According to your own ability and personality, do not be afraid to experiment with new and creative techniques for achieving reconciliation and social change.
9. If you feel you cannot take it, walk for another week or two. We have confidence in our people. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Do you think there will be a point in time when Americans feel sorry for the sorry ass GOP? I mean come on, this is getting RIDICULOUS....The GOP is embarrassed, so embarrassed by their lack of a common sense jobs plan to rebut President Obama's plan that they threw together a plan that sounds very much like one they threw out hundreds of times before....

The plan would put a moratorium on regulations, repeal the health care and financial reform laws, and streamline permitting for energy exploration and mining — all initiatives the GOP has been proposing all year.

The plan also calls for enacting a tax reform package with a maximum tax rate of 25 percent — far below the current maximum rate of 35 percent, which is scheduled to increase to 39.6 percent in 2013.

Wow, genius! The majority of the country has spoken, they say do NONE of these things the GOP put in their plan, and if you do we are kicking your asses to the curb!

Eric Cantor spoke out against these patriots today calling them MOBS, and of course blaming Democrats and the president....laughable and delusional....Why would the GOP leader condemn these people who are just exercising their right to protest, ya know, like the teabaggers did? These people have every right to be angry about economic inequality, corporate greed and the influence of money on American politics! This Occupying of Wall Street is NOT a Liberal version of the Tea Party, it is AN AMERICAN uprising from all facets of society who have had ENOUGH of the GREED on Wall Street!

Mitt Romney called the movement class warfare and said it was dangerous, while Herman Cain called the protesters "un-American."
Rick Santorum offered Obama some unsolicited advice, recommending that he distance himself from the protesters......
"This is the hard core of the Democratic Party, which, if I were Barack Obama — and I'm not giving advice to the president — I would certainly distance myself from," Santorum, who is running to replace Obama in 2012, said Friday on CNBC. "He's got those folks, what he's having problems with is the rest of America who's suffering because he's been listening too much to those folks." LOLOL!

FIVE Teabaggers show up to sit in their Walmart lawnchairs, hold their misspelled signs, drink their Kool-aid, and bash the Wall Street protesters AND the media focuses on THEM!!!

Since September 17th there has been a protest taking place in Liberty Plaza (Zuccotti Park), which is in the heart of New York City’s Financial district. The protest has been called “Occupy Wall Street”. It is a ”leaderless resistance movement” spearheaded by the activist magazine Adbusters. They want to take to task the people responsible for the meltdown of the national and world economy.

Up until now, there has been virtually no press coverage for the event. Just a smattering on some news outlets, with a little more coverage on liberal news outlets such as MSNBC and Current. However in recent days, a group of five Tea Party members have set up a lawn chairs directly across the street from the Wall Street protesters, so that they can protest “this liberal agenda of shutting down capitalism.” Since arriving on the scene, news trucks from around the world have focused their attention on this protest of the protest by these few Tea Party Patriots.

When asking one of the Tea Party members why they were there he replied, “Whenever I see these liberal progressive commies I assume it’s for a bad reason, so I’m here to make sure they don’t get too riled up and cause our economy to shut down completely.” When the Tea Party member was informed that the protesters were there to make their voices heard over the economic collapse, and want to hold the people to blame accountable he said, “Then why isn’t they down at the White House tellin’ that socialist Obama to stop tryin’ to regulate these here people just tryin’ to do business.”

It was quite obvious that the meaning of the protest was lost on these Tea Party members who were there just to be angry at “the progressives” with no other apparent cause to be sitting there all day every day. At least now the protest is getting the news coverage it was failing to draw on its own. Apparently, five Tea Party members is more news worthy than thousands of protesters.

The House Republicans have been working hard, or so they'd like you to believe. But what came out of "The People's House" yesterday is nothing but a punch in the gut for our suffering, job starved, poverty stricken nation. It is deplorable and disgusting...

The "draft budget" proposal for labor, health, and human services is nothing but an insult to our intelligence. It includes Planned Parenthood, National Public Radio, President Obama's health care reform law, and with winter just a month away (for most, sooner for some, with N Carolina mountains actually getting snow !) the bastards proposed cuts to heat subsidies, they slashed education funding by 2.4 billion, eliminated "Race to the Top" education reform program, and will reduce eligibility for Pell Grants for low-income college students...But most egregious, with this party of Goop who claimed to focus on JOBS in order to dupe the people into giving them power in 2010(idiots!), this budget REDUCES funding for job training programs that give the unemployed skills they need to FIND NEW WORK... DUH!!!
The GOP is slashing job training programs, but it's not the first time, in February the plan proposed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) — and approved by almost the entire GOP caucus — gutted federal job training funding by nearly 50 percent. Republicans’ preoccupation with abolishing these programs illustrates that their talk about creating jobs is nothing more than empty rhetoric to conceal a pro-corporate agenda.
This whole thing makes me ill, but is it a shock? ...Hell no, it's all very well planned and orchestrated to prevent Americans from finding work, moving out of poverty, and god-forbid, give the credit to the Democrats...The GOP DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, what more do you need to see before you get mad and VOTE the fuckers OUT!!??

One of the big applause lines in Christies speech was when he attacked the president because of his proposal to raise taxes on the wealthy. Here's what Christie said: "Telling those who are scared and struggling that the only way their lives can get better is to diminish the success of others. Trying to cynically convince those who are suffering that the American economic pie is no longer a growing one that can provide more prosperity for all who work hard. Insisting that we must tax and take and demonize those who have already achieved the American dream. That may turn out to be a good re-election strategy for President Obama, but it is a demoralizing message for America."

BULL SHIT!! Polls show more than 80% of the country want taxes raised on the top earners. A 4% increase which would put their rates at the level they were in the 1990's, a time of great prosperity!!! Where is the logic Christie?? President Obama has never demonized the rich Mr. Christie, get your facts straight before you demonize the president of our USA!

This man, Chris Christie, is just more of the same in his illogical thinking, you can not tax the rich for they are the job creators...but he has absolutely NO PROBLEM with the working poor and the middle class sacrificing more and more to balance the Phat Phucks budget! With the rich paying less, the rest of us have the burden of having to pay more- either in higher taxes or reduced services. Those at the top who have never had it so good can easily afford to 'sacrifice' a bit more, so the rest of us who haven't had it this bad in decades no longer have to sacrifice so much. Can you imagine living on 13,000 or even 20,000 a year and have to hear the Republicans whine about the working poor not paying any income tax?? It's crazy! They say 50% of Americans pay no taxes, so where is the shared sacrifice....I don't know how they look themselves in the mirror every day!

The truth is the working poor do pay taxes, even if they earn too little to qualify for the income tax, they pay payroll taxes (which Republicans want to raise), gasoline excise taxes and state and local taxes. Only 14 percent of households pay neither income nor payroll taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center at the Brookings Institution. The poorest fifth paid an average of 16.3 percent of income in taxes in 2010.
Economically, reducing the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit (which would be required if everyone paid income taxes) makes no sense at a time of high unemployment. The credits, which only go to working people, have always been a strong incentive to work and have increased the labor force while reducing the welfare rolls.
The real problem is that so many Americans are struggling on such a small income, not whether they pay taxes. The two tax credits lifted 7.2 million people out of poverty in 2009, including four million children. At a time when high-income households are paying their lowest share of federal taxes in decades, when corporations frequently avoid paying any tax, it is clear who should bear a larger burden and who should not.

The two parties agree we need shared sacrifice, but it's the Republicans who want to leave the top 2% out of the equation. Makes total sense, huh? Yeah to them it does...

The top 1% pay taxes at the lowest rate in half a century. In 1981 the top marginal rate was over 70%- now it's half that. Most of the wealthy take their income in capital gains, which are taxed at only 15%, down from 35% in the 1980s. Our economy grew faster in the 30 years after WWII, when taxes were higher, than since.

The ratio of corporate profits to wages is greater than since before the Great Depression. Corporate salaries and percs keep rising, while the median wage keeps dropping and jobs are shed. The CEO of Merck was rewarded $17.9 million last year, while he fired 13,000 workers. The top dog at BOA raked in $10 million, while he fired 30,000 workers.

We are entering a period of national sacrifice and MOST agree, we need to pull together, ALL of us and that MUST include the top earners. Last night on Facebook I had a discussion with a friend about the Congressional Black Caucus. She was none to thrilled to read about President Obama guest speaking to the CBC, but she went on to ask "why doesn't he speak to the CWC "? (sarcastically) She said it was racist for the CBC to turn away white members of Congress asking to join the group. She also went on to say if there was a "White Congressional Caucus" that would be considered racist.. so the Congressional Black Caucus is racist too...
I personally see nothing wrong with the CBC as a group open only to blacks, after all it is the Black Caucus....... Wikipedia states..The Congressional Black Caucus is one of the world's most esteemed bodies, with a history of positive activism unparalleled in our nation's history. Whether the issue is popular or unpopular, simple or complex, the CBC has fought for thirty years to protect the fundamentals of democracy. Its impact is recognized throughout the world. The Congressional Black Caucus is probably the closest group of legislators on the Hill. They work together almost incessantly, they are friends and, more importantly, a family of freedom fighters. Their diversity makes them stronger, and the expertise of all of their members has helped them be effective beyond their numbers.

The CBC was started by black members of Congress to work for the black community... could be because of unjust treatment from the white community. We all know it's true, we all know what racism is.....take a look at this horrific event and then remember just last week what happened to Troy Davis.....

In a South Carolina prison sixty-six years ago, guards walked a 14-year-old boy, bible tucked under his arm, to the electric chair. At 5' 1" and 95 pounds, the straps didn’t fit, and an electrode was too big for his leg.
The switch was pulled and the adult sized death mask fell from George Stinney’s face. Tears streamed from his eyes. Witnesses recoiled in horror as they watched the youngest person executed in the United States in the past century die.
Now, a community activist is fighting to clear Stinney’s name, saying the young boy couldn’t have killed two girls. George Frierson, a school board member and textile inspector, believes Stinney’s confession was coerced, and that his execution was just another injustice blacks suffered in Southern courtrooms in the first half of the 1900s.
In a couple of cases like Stinney’s, petitions are being made before parole boards and courts are being asked to overturn decisions made when society’s thumb was weighing the scales of justice against blacks. These requests are buoyed for the first time in generations by money, college degrees and sometimes clout.
“I hope we see more cases like this because it help brings a sense of closure. It’s symbolic,” said Howard University law professor Frank Wu. “It’s not just important for the individuals and their families. It’s important for the entire community. Not just for African Americans, but for whites and for our democracy as a whole. What these cases show is that it is possible to achieve justice.”
Some have already achieved justice. Earlier this year, syndicated radio host Tom Joyner successfully won a posthumous pardon for two great uncles who were executed in South Carolina.
A few years ago Lena Baker, a black Georgia maid sent to the electric chair for killing a white man, received a pardon after her family pointed out she likely killed the man because he was holding her against her will.
In the Stinney case, supporters want the state to admit that officials executed the wrong person in June 1944.
Stinney was accused of killing two white girls, 11 year old Betty June Binnicker and 8 year old
Mary Emma Thames, by beating them with a railroad spike then dragging their bodies to a ditch near Acolu, about five miles from Manning in central South Carolina. The girls were found a day after they disappeared following a massive manhunt. Stinney was arrested a few hours later, white men in suits taking him away. Because of the risk of a lynching, Stinney was kept at a jail 50 miles away in Columbia.
Stinney’s father, who had helped look for the girls, was fired immediately and ordered to leave his home and the sawmill where he worked. His family was told to leave town prior to the trial to avoid further retribution. An atmosphere of lynch mob hysteria hung over the courthouse. Without family visits, the 14 year old had to endure the trial and death alone.
Frierson hasn’t been able to get the case out of his head since, carrying around a thick binder of old newspaper stories and documents, including an account from an execution witness.
The sheriff at the time said Stinney admitted to the killings, but there is only his word — no written record of the confession has been found. A lawyer helping Frierson with the case figures threats of mob violence and not being able to see his parents rattled the seventh- grader.
Attorney Steve McKenzie said he has even heard one account that says detectives offered the boy ice cream once they were done.
“You’ve got to know he was going to say whatever they wanted him to say,” McKenzie said.
The court appointed Stinney an attorney — a tax commissioner preparing for a Statehouse run. In all, the trial — from jury selection to a sentence of death — lasted one day. Records indicate 1,000 people crammed the courthouse. Blacks weren’t allowed inside.
The defense called no witnesses and never filed an appeal. No one challenged the sheriff’s recollection of the confession.
“As an attorney, it just kind of haunted me, just the way the judicial system worked to this boy’s disadvantage or disfavor. It did not protect him,” said McKenzie, who is preparing court papers to ask a judge to reopen the case.
Stinney’s official court record contains less than two dozen pages, several of them arrest warrants. There is no transcript of the trial.
The lack of records, while not unusual, makes it harder for people trying to get these old convictions overturned, Wu said.
But these old cases also can have a common thread.
“Some of these cases are so egregious, so extreme that when you look at it, the prosecution really has no case either,” Wu said. “It’s apparent from what you can see that someone was railroaded.”
And sometimes, police under pressure by frightened citizens jumped to conclusions rather than conducting a thorough investigation, Wu said.

Debate #1...Ron Paul was asked a hypothetical question about a dying man without health insurance...the teabaggers in the audience cheered for the dying man who had no chance at life...Conclusion: the teabaggers believe health insurance is a privilege not a right and if one decides not to purchase insurance and then subsequently gets a terminal illness well that's his fuckin stupidity, so die, just die....no turning back, too bad sucker you had your chance....

Debate #2....Rick Perry was asked some kinda question about the over 200 executions under his watch in Texas and the teabaggers cheered wildly for the deaths by legal injection...Conclusion: teabaggers believe in the Biblical an eye for an eye. If a person was found guilty by his peers and then 20 yrs later evidence was brought forward to cast reasonable doubt on the man's guilt, well fuck it. Too late Mister...20 yrs previous you were found guilty so that's what we're going by...die possible innocent man, die... because facts don't matter when so much time has passed... the state would look like an incompetent fool if they had to admit holding the wrong man on death row for half his life... so we'll just put this whole debacle behind us and execute him....there ya have it, an eye for an eye.

Rick Santorum, when given the chance to answer the soldier, said..."sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military," and said the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which took effect this week, was injecting "social policy into the military." and so he would reverse the decision to repeal it....SEX and the act of sex?? Is this all repubs think about while envisioning a gay or lesbian in the military? Do they envision straight men and women in sex acts as soldiers?? Conclusion: Conservative/teabaggers are repulsed by gays. Homosexuality is an abomination according to God, so enlist to defend our country but do not tell us you are gay cuz then we'll have the vision of your sexual activity forever in our minds and we won't be able to carry out the mission of defending our nation.....(((Shudder)))

Tonight I am sickened, saddened and never have I been more embarrassed of my country as I am tonight...Our INJUSTICE system is responsible for tonights execution of a man named Troy Davis. This man was found guilty of murder on circumstantial evidence, NOT DNA, which should be mandatory in a death penalty case. The state of Georgia will not be able to shake this injustice nor will they be able to shake off the racist accusations surrounding this horrendous verdict. Fuck you racist Georgia and ALL involved in the "murder" of Troy Davis. Let me be clear...I do not know for a fact this man is innocent, but what we are supposed to do in the US of A is give a man a fair trial and NEVER execute a human being unless there is 100% proof of guilt.

For those who are so quick to condemn the Muslim people for acts of violence, then turn around and cheer for the executions of our fellow Americans is horrific to me. I am not an advocate for the death penalty, and surely NEVER ever should a man be executed with ANY doubt about their guilt. This Troy Davis trial was FULL of doubt, yet this man is going to die tonight. Sick fuckin sick USA...

To a Democratic Socialist, sharing the wealth means pooling tax money together to design social programs that benefit ALL citizens of that country, city, state, etc.
The fire and police departments are both excellent examples of Democratic Socialism in America. Rather than leaving each individual responsible for protecting their own home from fire, everyone pools their money together, through taxes, to maintain a fire and police department. It’s operated under a non-profit status, and yes, your tax dollars pay for putting out other people’s fires. It would almost seem absurd to think of some corporation profiting from putting out fires. But it’s more efficient and far less expensive to have government run fire departments funded by tax dollars.
Similarly, public education is another social program in the USA. It benefits all of us to have a taxpayer supported, publicly run education system. Unfortunately, in America, the public education system ends with high school. Most of Europe now provides low cost or free college education for their citizens. This is because their citizens understand that an educated society is a safer, more productive and more prosperous society. Living in such a society, everyone benefits from public education.

Yes, because of low tax rates Paul is right, the rich are getting richer, but he is delusional when he says the poor are getting richer! One in three middle class American workers is slipping down the income ladder, wages are stagnant and the purchasing power of the minimum wage were at a 51 yr low. So yes, Rand Paul is a delusional teabagging wacko...

Finally, we have our president standing up and strongly putting forth his plan for jobs and deficit reduction. This is the fight we have been waiting almost 3 years for! President Obama was tough today, speaking in the White House Rose Garden he told the Republicans what he expects them to do and if they deliver a bill to him with no tax increases he will veto! Republicans fight back calling this class warfare, oh Gawd, how pathetic they are....

"This is not class warfare -- it's math," Mr. Obama said, addressing GOP critiques of his plan head on.
"The money has to come from some place," he continued. "If we're not willing to ask those who've done extraordinarily well to help America close the deficit... the math says everybody else has to do a whole lot more, we've got to put the entire burden on the middle class and the poor."

We are living in extraordinary times and they call for extraordinary measures, this IS FAIR! Even Warren Buffet says it is fair...

It’s a plan that reduces our debt by more than $4 trillion, and achieves these savings in a way that is fair--by asking everybody to do their part so that no one has to bear too much of the burden on their own.
Obama, “All told, this plan cuts $2 in spending for every dollar in new revenues. In addition to the $1 trillion in spending that we’ve already cut from the budget, our plan makes additional spending cuts that need to happen if we’re to solve this problem. I love Brad Pitt, not only for his handsome face, but for his huge heart....

In today's Sunday Parade he was asked how he and Angelina find time to help refugees and other victims all over the world and why do they do it......He said, "I'll tell you why, because I hit the lottery---the whole cliche' of moving to Hollywood and getting paid silly amounts of money. I've traveled the world and seen mothers and babies dying because they don't have a 30 cent treatment that is available in industrialized nations. I feel like I have to share whatever I can. You're culpable if you don't act. You know, we bitch about raising taxes. I think the argument is that it's my money, I earned it, why do I have to pay for other people? I get very frustrated with that argument. I don't mind paying taxes. I live in a country that gave me the opportunity to make money, and most people on this planet do not have that."

Whatta guy... First I need to say to those complaining (I hear ya!), Brad and Angie do a lot right here in our country too. Most recently with his Make it Right foundation in New Orleans. They gave 5 Million in aid and are constructing new Green houses for hurricane victims.

To my readers who will make fun of this post because, well, they hate Hollywood types, I guess out of jealousy, but they hate them., You can't give me one single example of Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie doing their humanitarian work because of ego. They give of themselves and they give their money because they are driven with a desire to help those in need, those less fortunate than most. I don't know for sure if Brad is a Liberal, he acts and talks like a Liberal. Yea, I think he is......

I was visiting my friend John's blog today and read this response by him to a comment stating "I will not vote for Obama in 2012". The commenter is dismayed at the presidents inability to push forth his progressive liberal agenda with more force, and at a quicker pace. Nothing against this commenter, she is a friend, but we don't share a love of the president.....She said she would vote for the Green candidate so John responded, and I agreed...

'Vote Green, Perry needs you. While putting Perry in office, will certainly “show” Obama, consider this:
Once Perry takes an office, he does not leave it. After eight years of Perry rule, the Supreme Court will be a Tea Party body.
Roe V. Wade will be overturned. You are putting God in the White House, and not the moderate God who mostly stones disrespectful virgins and smites babies, but otherwise stays out of our lives, no not Him. You are putting the God who wants to monitor every aspect of our lives in office and on the Supreme Court. This God even rejects His native language of Elizebethan English in favor of Tongues.
He babbles in Tongues. Perry listens and responds.
Obama is NOT completely conservative. He extended unemployment, tried to take us closer to Universal Healthcare, Rejected the AZ immigration laws, Extended START, Removed the stem cell research restrictions Bush had in place with an Executive Order, no less, rejected DOMA and repealed DADT.
Perry would have done none of these things. Obama is not the most effective liberal in history. He tries to compromise with those who will not compromise and he acts as if he is dealing with opponents who will. It is illogical.
Obama is making the exact same mistake Spock made. I am sure you already thought of that. While in command on some planet, this backward alien species was rocking his shuttlecraft back and forth and pounding on it or something. Even though the craft was built to withstand the pressure of reentry into the atmosphere of different planets, apparently, this could not be tolerated. It would destroy the craft. The species was dumber than a pack of wild dogs. They were virtually mindless. Spock reasoned that a mild show of force should be enough to stop them because it would be “illogical to stand against a superior enemy.” Of course, his show of force had no effect because wild dogs do not make decisions based on logic. Though we had to believe Spock was logical because he told us he was several times, his strategy was not logical. I think Obama is a fan of Star Trek.
So vote Green; vote Perry. Perry 2012 and beyond!'

Today's Republicans are not the Republicans your parents or grandparents voted for. The thought of one of the tea party candidates winning the White House should scare the shit out of every single Democrat in this country. I was thinking....At the TeaParty Republican debate Ron Paul was asked what a person who chooses not to buy health insurance but gets sick is supposed to do to get the care he needs to stay alive. The teabaggers in the audience applauded and some cheered loudly when Wolf Blitzer asked Paul if the man should just be left to die. But how do you explain these people who criticize the presidents proposed mandate that all Americans must buy health insurance, they call it unconstitutional! It's one of the "Obamacare" proposals they are most vocal on. Is their stance you should not be forced to buy insurance or you should be forced to buy insurance?? Should that man have been forced to buy insurance so he didn't die, NO, because the TP's say that is unconstitutional, right? So why then did they cheer for a "dying man" who had no insurance if they say it's okay not to be insured?? Do you think the teabaggers know how confused they are?

Just a word on the NY-9 Anthony Weiner seat special election loss for Dems....I don't believe for a second this was meant as a wake up call for President Obama. This district is heavily populated with people of the Jewish Faith, we all know they are not thrilled with Pres. Obama, so what do people who are upset with their president do? The fact is, we pay for the lifestyle we expect. Without taxes, our lifestyles would be totally different and much harder. America would be a third world country. The less we pay, the less we get in return. Americans pay less taxes today since 1958 and is ranked 32nd out of 34 of the top tax paying countries. Chile and Mexico are 33rd and 34th. The Republicans are lying when they say that we pay the highest taxes in the world and are only attacking taxes to reward corporations and the wealthy and to weaken our infrastructure and way of life. So next time you object to paying taxes or fight to abolish taxes for corporations and the wealthy, keep this quote in mind…

Postal Workers: The Last Union

The recent attacks against the United States Postal Service (USPS) are more than signs of desperate times - a natural sunset moment for a service rendered archaic by FedEx and UPS. Rather, the Postal Service has been under constant, vicious assault for years from the right, who views this as an epic battle with the goal of finally taking down the strongest union in the country, the second largest employer in the United States (second only to Wal-Mart,) and a means to roll the country ever closer toward the abyss of privatization.

The Postal Service, which is older than the Constitution itself, stands at a precipice. If this great institution, which provides one of the oldest, most reliable services in the country, is permitted to fall and Congress kills its great union, then truly no collective bargaining rights, no worker contract, no union will be safe within the United States.

As the USPS spirals toward default, the historically uncontroversial mail service system has suddenly become a hot-button issue. It's an unlikely organization to inspire such hysteria. The Postal Service isn't paid for by taxpayer dollars, but rather fully funded by the sale of stamps. It's easy to forget what a marvel this is - that today, in 2011, one can still mail a letter clear across the country for less than 50 cents. And if the impressiveness of that feat still hasn't sunk in, attempt this brain exercise: consider what else you can buy for $0.44.

It was only a few years ago that the USPS was considered not only stable, but thriving. The biggest volume in pieces of mail handled by the Postal Service in its 236-year history was in 2006. The second and third busiest years were in 2005 and 2007, respectively. But it was two events: one crafted during the Bush years and another supervised by House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, that would cripple this once great institution.

Perhaps it was its booming history that first drew Congress' attention to the Postal Service in 2006 when it passed the Postal Accountability Enhancement Act (PAEA), which mandated that the Postal Service would have to fully fund retiree health benefits for future retirees. That's right. Congress was demanding universal health care coverage.

But it even went beyond that. Congress was mandating coverage for future human beings.

"It's almost hard to comprehend what they're talking about, but basically they said that the Postal Service would have to fully fund future retirees' health benefits for the next 75 years and they would have to do it within a ten-year window," says Chuck Zlatkin, political director of the New York Metro Area Postal Union.

Sooooo, the president has asked federal agencies to find solutions on their own. His message to lawmakers: We can do this without you.

In a week the president will speak before Congress to lay out a BOLD (hopefully) plan for America, and he won't say it but I will...Fuck Congress and their do-nothing attitude, he can do plenty without any help from them thank you! The President wants Congress to know he is moving forward without them by directing several federal agencies to identify high impact, job creating infrastructure projects that can be expedited now without the approval of Congress. President Obama is showing leadership by moving forward.... Channel FDR, President Obama!! Channel FDR!! Damn I just LOVE those 1936 speeches, they give me chills.....

I know we aren't supposed to use comparisons, but when you look at the videos of FDR and see the leadership, the compassion, you just knew he was not gonna let those Republicans destroy what he had accomplished. This man put the country at ease, he took away their fears, the people trusted him, he was their leader and they loved him. This is what the country wanted from Barack Obama in 2008. If it wasn't for the hate, the obstruction, the racism, the media, the GOP...I think we could have that same hope FDR gave Americans.

FDR was vilified in his day as a Socialist, a Communist and a traitor. He didn't back down from that fight, calling the large moneyed interests who fought against him what they were: economic royalists who sought greed over simple human decency. They hated the New Deal with a passion because there wasn't enough in it for them, and too much for the "little people."
It's time more of our current Democrats learned the lesson he did: that when you help the vast majority of Americans get good jobs to pay their rent and mortgages, buy groceries for their kids and get health care when they need it at an affordable price, while reining in the worst excesses of the obscenely wealthy "corporate royalists" (or as an earlier era labeled them "robber barons") you strengthen not only your country but you grow your party as well.

Roosevelt created demand by creating jobs. He strengthened unions and labor. He gave us the first programs to provide a social safety net in this country so the elderly, the unemployed and the disabled didn't die because they were too poor to afford food and shelter. Did everything he did turn out perfect? Of course not. But in the long run, the New Deal radically changed America for the better.
You can't say that about the policies promoted by Republicans and conservative Democrats over the last 30 years. Those polices led to government and corporate corruption, fraud, and an economic implosion on a massive scale unknown since the Great Depression. They have also set Americans against fellow Americans and put a heavy anchor on our ability as a nation to compete and succeed in the world.

CREATING DEMAND...This is where President Obama must begin. Next week, we shall see...

My President deserves the recognition and he deserves the time spent reading this list....

To Those Who Consider President Obama a Disappointment; You're Just NOT Paying Attention!

If you think President Obama is a failure, or you're "disappointed" in him, the problem pretty much has to be you. So far, this president has done most of what he said he would do, and he's only halfway through his first term. Not only is he NOT a "failure," he's pretty much the opposite. Hell; he even took out Osama bin Laden, something Bush couldn't do in eight years. Of course, Bush also said several times that he really didn't care bout bin Laden, anyway...

Is he perfect? No, he's human. Does he deserve some criticism? Sure. But criticism about certain specific problems is one thing; taking on an overall "Obama sucks" meme not only has the potential to put another Bush into power, but it's also a lie to say, or even imply, he's a lousy president.

Here is a PARTIAL list of Obama's accomplishments so far. Unlike many lists, I actually include a link to details. I also update this list regularly, so check back often.

Anytime someone, right OR left, tells you Obama sucks, or is a "disappointment," show them this list and tell them to kiss a part of your body not usually considered pleasant to kiss.

Sorry President Barack Obama haters, he will be yours and My president until 2016, so get used to it! According to Allen Lichtman, in his book The Keys to the White House, the 13 Keys to winning re election are showing him Barack Obama will win in 2012. Oh sure, conservatives will boo hoo this book but Lichtman has correctly predicted the wins and loses of every presidential election since 1984. He says even at this early date he does not see how Obama can lose...

Here's how it works, Lichtman identifies 13 keys to the presidency with yes or no questions, if six of these questions go against the incumbent, the incumbent loses. If it is less than six, the incumbent wins.

Here are those keys from Politicology and Noah Rothman,

1. Party Mandate: After the midterm election, the incumbent party holds more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives than they did after the previous midterm elections. – Yeah, this one is a loss for the president. But, it’s early. Let’s keep going.

2. Contest: There is no contest for the incumbent party nomination. – Nope. There is definitely grumbling in the Democratic set but it's objectively hard to conceive of a major challenge to Obama for the Democratic nomination. The president wins.

3. Incumbency: The incumbent party candidate is the president. – Yep. Another win.

4. Third Party: There is no significant third party challenge. – Well… yet to be seen. “significant” is probably the saving grace here. There has been a third and even fourth party candidate with some national stature in every election since 1992, so it’s a safe bet that there will be a third party candidate of some kind. How major a challenge that third party is to either party is debatable. But, Lichtman give this one to Obama so I will too. Win.

5. Short Term Economy: The economy is not in recession during the campaign. – Lichtman gives this an “undecided” ranking, meaning that it is uncounted. Given the trends we are seeing it is hard to think that this is a growing economy. I know, officially the recession ended in 2009 and 2010 was the start of the recovery, but all that is Orwellian “new speak” compared to the reality on the ground. I’m inclined to give Obama a losing score on this point, but we’ll count our tallies later.

6. Long-Term Economy: Real per capita economic growth during the term equals or exceeds mean growth during the previous two terms. – Yeah, inherited or no, this economy blows and Obama will take it on the chin for it. Obama loses this one objectively.

7. Policy Change: The incumbent administration effects major changes in national policy. – Without question. Some of the most sweeping policy changes we’ve seen in a decade or more. Obama wins. (The popularity of those sweeping changes is not taken into account).

8. Social Unrest: There is no sustained social unrest. – Obama wins this too. The Tea Party may have counted but its intensity has dissipated after the 2010 elections. Also, the Tea Party label is becoming less and less popular, signifying that this movement will not be “sustained” into 2012.

9. Scandal: The incumbent administration is untainted by major scandal. – Lichtman gives this one to Obama. Although his assessment that “this administration has been squeaky clean,” is overly complimentary. I have not seen a “squeaky clean” administration in my lifetime and this is no exception. We’ll see how Cash for Firearms plays out… As that matures, however, it’s a win.

10. Foreign / Military Failure: The incumbent administration suffers no major failure in foreign or military affairs. – Nothing significant. Big win for Obama.

11. Foreign / Military Success: The incumbent administration achieves a major success in foreign or military affairs. – Oh yeah. Bin Laden, Libya… Obama win.

12. Incumbent Charisma: The incumbent party candidate is charismatic or a national hero. – Lichtman does not give this one to Obama. He cites the doctrine of “leading from behind,” in foreign affairs and in domestic policy debates as the problem. This one, despite expectations to the contrary in 2008, is a loss for Obama.

13. Challenger Charisma: The challenging party candidate is not charismatic or a national hero. – This is a win for Obama. Unless Gen. David Patraeus jumps in, the GOP race is devoid of national heroes.

Sanders focused much of his speech on the Social Security system, blasting suggestions by Democrats and Republicans alike that, for example, we should adjust the cost of living adjustment to cut Social Security payments to working class Americans or raise the retirement age. “When [Social Security] was developed, 50 percent of seniors lived in poverty. Today, poverty among seniors is too high, but that number is ten percent. Social Security has done exactly what it was designed to do!” he thundered, defending the program.

Today, Sanders announced that he will introduce legislation that would strengthen Social Security without cutting benefits to any of its beneficiaries. Sanders’ legislation would eliminate the income cap that currently exists in the payroll tax that does not tax income above $106,800:

To keep Social Security strong for another 75 years, Sanders’ legislation would apply the same payroll tax already paid by more than nine out of 10 Americans to those with incomes over $250,000 a year. #2 The debt of the state of Texas is out of control. According to usdebtclock.org, the debt to GDP ratio in Texas is 22.9% and the debt per citizen is $10,645. In California (a total financial basket case), the debt to GDP ratio is just 18.7% and the debt per citizen is only $9932. If Rick Perry runs for president these are numbers he will want to keep well hidden.

#3 The total debt of the Texas government has more than doubled since Rick Perry became governor. So what would the U.S. national debt look like after four (or eight) years of Rick Perry?

#4 Rick Perry has spearheaded the effort to lease roads in Texas to foreign companies, to turn roads that are already free to drive on into toll roads, and to develop the Trans-Texas Corridor which would be part of the planned NAFTA superhighway system. If you really do deep research on this whole Trans-Texas Corridor nonsense you will see why no American should ever cast a single vote for Rick Perry.

#5 Rick Perry claims that he has a “track record” of not raising taxes. That is a false claim. Rick Perry has repeatedly raised taxes and fees while he has been governor. Today, Texans are faced with significantly higher taxes and fees than they were before Rick Perry was elected.

#6 Even with the oil boom in Texas, 23 states have a lower unemployment rate than Texas does.

#7 Back in 1988, Rick Perry supported Al Gore for president. In fact, Rick Perry actually served as Al Gore’s campaign chairman in the state of Texas that year.

#8 Between December 2007 and April 2011, weekly wages in the U.S. increased by about 5 percent. In the state of Texas they increased by just 0.6% over that same time period.

#9 Texas now has one of the worst education systems in the nation. The following is from an opinion piece that was actually authored by Barbara Bush earlier this year….

• We rank 36th in the nation in high school graduation rates. An estimated 3.8 million Texans do not have a high school diploma.

• We rank 49th in verbal SAT scores, 47th in literacy and 46th in average math SAT scores.

• We rank 33rd in the nation on teacher salaries.

#10 Rick Perry attended the Bilderberg Group meetings in 2007. Associating himself with that organization should be a red flag for all American voters.

#11 Texas has the highest percentage of workers making minimum wage out of all 50 states.

#12 Rick Perry often gives speeches about illegal immigration, but when you look at the facts, he has been incredibly soft on the issue. If Rick Perry does not plan to secure the border, then he should not be president because illegal immigration is absolutely devastating many areas of the southwest United States.

#13 In 2007, 221,000 residents of Texas were making minimum wage or less. By 2010, that number had risen to 550,000.

#14 Rick Perry actually issued an executive order in 2007 that would have forced almost every single girl in the state of Texas to receive the Gardasil vaccine before entering the sixth grade. Perry would have put parents in a position where they would have had to fill out an application and beg the government not to inject their child with a highly controversial vaccine.

I think I've lost a few friends this week, you see I am a staunch Democrat/Liberal/ but NOT a hard left Progressive who finds fault in everything President Obama does "because damn it, he's just plain 'ole acting like George Bush". But that's okay, in the end I'll be correct in my unwavering support of the president.

Right from the start of Barack Obama's campaign, race was brought into the equation. The Left and Right brought it up but for different reasons. The Right fears Barack Obama's black heritage, they don't consider him "one of us", so if Obama is Bush light then why else would the Righties want to destroy him?.....The Moderate Left understands Barack Obama's black heritage, embraces it, AND can "feel" what is in his heart because of it.

If we progressives were not blinded by our own assumption that our history is the only history, we might see how Obama may be seeing his situation.

White progressives often think that African American elected officials are politically naive. We will far more credit to Cornel West, who has never been elected to anything, than to an elected state senator, or even the President of the United States. We think that Obama does not understand the nature of John Boehner, Mitch McConnell or Eric Cantor, as though he has not sat across the table from them. He doesn't understand how mean they are, we think.

Obama acts entirely within the tradition of mainstream African American political strategy and tactics. The epitome of that tradition was the non-violence of the Civil Rights Movement, but goes back much further in time. It recognizes the inequality of power between whites and blacks. Number one: maintain your dignity. Number two: call your adversaries to the highest principles they hold. Number three: Seize the moral high ground and Number four: Win by winning over your adversaries, by revealing the contradiction between their own ideals and their actions. It is one way that a oppressed people struggle.

Obama has taken a seat at the negotiating table and said "There is no reason why we cannot work out solutions to our problems by acting like responsible adults. That is what people expect us to do and that is why we have entered into public service." That is the moral high ground.

Honestly, I have been reminded more than once in the last few months of those brave college students sitting in at a Woolworth's lunch counter, back in the day. Obama sits at that table, like they did at the counter. Boehner and McConnell and Cantor clown around, mugging for the camera, competing to ritually humiliate Obama, to dump ketchup on his head.

I don't think those students got their sandwiches the first day, but they won in the end.

Obama is winning. Democrats are uniting behind him, although some white progressives think that they could do the job better. Independents are flocking to him. Even some Republicans are getting disgusted with their Washington leaders. Obama is not telling us about lack of seriousness of the Congressional GOP; he is showing us the vivid contrast between what we expect of our leaders and their behavior. The last two and half years have been a revelation of the essential conflicts in our society and politics.

If white progressives understood much about the politics of the African American struggle in the United States, we would see Obama in the context of that struggle and understand him better. And you don't have to be African American to know something about the history of the African American struggle. The books and the testimony is there. It's not all freedom songs. But you have to be convinced that it is something that can teach you something you don't already know.

On September 28, 2009, at 1:40 p.m., God’s messengers visited Rick Perry.
On this day, the Lord’s messengers arrived in the form of two Texas pastors, Tom Schlueter of Arlington and Bob Long of San Marcos, who called on Perry in the governor’s office inside the state Capitol. Schlueter and Long both oversee small congregations, but they are more than just pastors. Last night, we stood in a crowded square outside the state Capitol in Madison. Teachers, fire fighters, police officers, moms, and dads chanted, "This is what democracy looks like."
It was powerful. And as the election results came in, something else was clear: The voters are powerful.
When Republicans declared war on working families, we could have retreated. But together, we took the fight onto their home turf and put them on defense for a change. And in 2 of 6 Republican strongholds, we won.
History will deem last night a victory for progressives. Here are some key facts:

Gov. Scott Walker no longer has a working majority in the Senate. His extreme anti-worker bill passed by only 2 votes, thanks to 1 moderate Republican. Our 2 wins are game changing.
If last night's election was statewide, Democrats would have won in a landslide. We forced neck-and-neck races in Republican areas.
In 2012, if Democrats achieve last night's rate of success in Republican House districts, Speaker Nancy Pelosi will have a 274-seat majority.
We sent a national message that when Republican politicians hurt working families, voters will punish them -- even in Republican areas.
We also proved that when Democrats stand strong for progressive principles -- as Wisconsin Democrats did -- they will be rewarded by voters and volunteers.

So, out of a handful of primarily Republican districts, TWO seats were taken from those Republican districts and went BLUE, BIG BEAUTIFUL BLUE, this is a BIG DEAL people! Don't let anybody say this was a Democratic loss because they are lying. When the time comes for the whole state to vote on Scott Walkers recall, the whole country will be watching the dedicated, hard working patriots, Wisconsin's finest!! They are not giving up or giving in to any Rethug!

More Politics 101: Obama is SMARTER Than Us!

I’m not angry often. I don’t believe anger is an emotion that makes things better for anyone but yourself, and even that is rare. This is generally a political blog, and in politics, anger is poisonous. I can’t say this enough; the average voter in this country (NOT voters on either extreme side of the political spectrum, but those who actually decide elections) is NOT motivated by anger, cannot be motivated by anger (usually), and actually reacts to expressed anger with disgust, for the most part. They don’t want to elect angry people, they want to elect competent people. They don’t care what WE think the issues are; they want to elect someone who knows and understands the issues and will do something about it.

Put simply, the general public already thinks all politicians suck, so you reiterating that politicians suck does nothing to advance the political process.

But I’m becoming angry with the far left these days, not just because they’re being unfair to the president and the Democrats, but because they pose as political “experts,” despite the fact that they seem to know nothing about how politics actually works.

Let’s start this rant by reminding you that the man occupying the White House currently got to where he is in spite of the fact that:

He is a black man;
He had a father who was a Kenyan Muslim;
He has an unusual name;
He didn’t have a ton of political experience when he ran and;
He had to beat one of the most established legacies in Democratic politics in the primary, and a respected war hero politician in the general election.

Barack Obama could very well be the most brilliant politician of our day. He knows what’s up far better than we do. To NOT defer to his judgment except in extreme circumstances is much like hiring a mechanic to repair your car and then telling him how (s)he should rebuild your carburetor. Put simply, if you think you can do it better, then do it. Otherwise, shut the hell up, because you sound stupid when you criticize an expert.

That is why all of you Monday morning quarterbacks out there – those of you who are constantly going on about how big a screw-up Obama is, and how he “should have” done something that YOU think would have “worked better” -- just look pathetic. Seriously, you look sillier than shit, and it’s pissing most liberals off, because you’re affecting the discourse, and you’re making it more difficult to beat the right wing, which absolutely MUST be our first order of business for the next several election cycles. Pardon my French, but FUCK the Blue Dogs. THEY are NOT the problem. The problem is the extreme right, who are hell-bent on dismantling this country, one brick at a time.

All these “woulda coulda shoulda” outbursts coming from some of you demonstrate nothing more than an incredible political naiveté that is absolutely vomit-inducing. Seriously, many of you sound like that blowhard uncle we all have, who's an expert on every goddamn thing, despite the fact that he can't seem to find a job that pays more than $10 an hour. The people I’m talking about NEVER seem to read actual news stories, and they rarely deal with actual facts. Instead, they watch talking head shows, take everything that fits their current belief system, and discard everything else.

Sound familiar? Yep, you’re right. Some of these folks act the same way toward left wing talking heads that the right wing does with theirs. And it’s not smart. “Absorbing more information” only makes you smarter if you bother to verify the information you’re given, and you also put it into a proper perspective.

And as is my tendency with this blog, I’m going to give specific examples of what I mean. That makes me different than most bloggers, who make sweeping proclamations that are unsupported by any sort of reality. These are memes pushed by the far left on blogs and in comments, and they’re just plain STUPID. And I'm showing you why they're stupid.

Obama and the Democrats should have made the stimulus bigger.

You’re right, of course. To be effective, the stimulus should have been a lot bigger.

And for the record, my unicorn would be much prettier if it farted glitter, too.

You see, what we want to do and what we can do are often very different things. It would have been nice if President Obama could have just demanded $2 trillion in stimulus right out of the gate, but how realistic was that, really? Perhaps if the Republicans hadn’t already run up $12 trillion in extra debt, we could have taken on a little more. If that had been the case, Obama could have explained that our debt was only 35-40% of GDP, and pushing it up to 50% of GDP was not unprecedented.

But you know what? The Republicans had run up the debt, and the level of debt was more than 80% of GDP. Suddenly, a country that was used to being told – by liberals, no less – that a $400 billion deficit was dangerous as hell, was looking at a deficit of nearly $1.7 trillion, even without a stimulus package. What do you think would have happened had Obama spiked it up to nearly $4 trillion in one fell swoop? More importantly, who do you imagine was going to vote for such a bill, besides a handful of progressives in safe districts?

And that doesn't even take into account the whole “Democrats spend money like drunken sailors” meme, which has been tossed around for years, even though it’s untrue.

See, the problem with politics is, at some point, idealism runs into reality. It’s great to say Obama “should have” gone for $2 trillion in stimulus, but what’s the point of doing so, if you have no chance of getting it? Obama was actually told by experts that the most he could hope for was about $400 billion and he got twice that, thanks to a few carefully placed tax cuts for average people. What he got, in a country that was already looking at huge deficits, was actually quite amazing, politically speaking. Here was a president who’d taken the oath less than a month earlier, and he was able to usher through a single bill that cost taxpayers $800 billion over 3 years, and did so with zero Republican votes.

And let me disabuse some of you of something else. There’s this idea floating around out there, that perhaps Obama should have proposed a $3 trillion bill that would have been negotiated down to, say, $1.5-2 trillion. If you think that’s how bills become law, you do not understand the process. MOST negotiations occur while a bill is being written, not while it’s on the floor of the House or Senate. If you ask for too much in a bill, you kill it. If a bill for $3 trillion in stimulus had been presented, it never would have seen the light of day. Ask Dennis Kucinich how many of his bills actually end up being debated on the House floor, and then ask yourself why that's the case. There are hundreds of bills on the floor of either chamber at any one time; they only have time to deal with those with a realistic chance of passing. A $3 trillion bill would have had no chance. Not only that, but killing that bill might have killed the very idea of a stimulus in the public's mind altogether. A $400 billion bill was turned into a nearly $800 billion bill, which is something of a miracle, but the way you push through a bill like that is to start low and push it higher, not the other way around.

Obama caved on the Bush tax cuts.

One problem with some of these arguments is that they’re too simple-minded to take seriously.

The fact of the matter is, the Bush tax cuts are not just tax cuts for the rich; letting them expire would have meant everyone's tax bill would have risen, at a time when the economy was still trying to recover. These tax increases would have hit everyone on January 1, 2011, and the new GOP Congress was to take office two days later. They would have entered Congress with a promise to save everyone by reducing their taxes back down to where they had been, and they probably would have been successful. They had a majority in the House, and a tax reduction probably would have also passed the Senate. And there are enough Democrats in conservative districts that it’s quite possible such a tax cut bill might have passed with a veto-proof majority. Not only that, but knowing Republicans, they would have extended them for far longer than 2 years.

Obama, being smarter than us, politically, saw this, and he circumvented the process and made a deal, getting an extension of unemployment and several other concessions that he knew Republicans would never go for on their own. And he extended them for only two years, instead of the ten or more the GOP would have gone for.

If you’re going to accuse Obama of "caving" on this, you should at least tell the truth. The Bush tax cuts were going to be extended, regardless; that Obama got something for them, and limited that extension to two years, instead of ten or more, means he took a negative and turned it into a net positive.

Obama put Social Security and Medicare cuts on the table, and capitulated on a debt ceiling deal.

Once again, politically speaking, this notion is pure stupidity.

Obama never ACTUALLY put such cuts “on the table.” To say so makes you politically naïve. One of the key components of legislative politics involves posturing. For months, Republicans had been demanding cuts in entitlement programs in order to raise the debt ceiling. (Yes, I know John Conyers said they hadn’t a week or so ago, but that’s not true. This is why you have to check facts, REGARDLESS of source. Here is just one example. And here's another. And here's yet another. Note the dates. You get the point. Check facts, even when John Conyers says it. )

If you’ll recall, the original deadline for raising the ceiling was April 15, then it was May 16. Through some clever accounting, Treasury was able to extend the deadline to a “drop-dead” date of August 2. (Just between us, we probably had another week or two; neither Obama nor Geithner seem particularly careless about things like this.) So, after months of watching Republicans dicking around with the phony debt ceiling “crisis” and demanding huge entitlement “reforms” every step of the way, Obama finally called their bluff.

Contrary to what some lefty blogs told us, however, the president NEVER made any specific detailed cuts public, and probably didn’t make any privately, either. He simply dared them to mention something specific that they wanted to cut. (He did this before, by the way; how many times during the health care debate did Obama challenge the Republicans to come up with specific things they wanted to do to health care reform, and they never responded.) He threw out a number, too; $4 trillion.

This was great politics on a number of levels. First of all, it forced the Republicans to panic. I know many of you naysayers don’t actually pay attention to what happens; you’re too enamored of your own feigned “expertise” to notice. But what happened was priceless. Within hours – on a weekend, no less! – Speaker Orange Boner proposed a much smaller spending cut package, containing ZERO cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. And Miss McConnell came out of his turtle shell long enough to offer up a proposal that would actually give the president authority to raise the debt ceiling.

Why would they not take him up on the offer to cut? Because they're already on record trying to kill Medicare. I mean DUH! He knew they would NEVER want to be on record as wanting to harm seniors to that degree.

Not only that, but if you were paying attention (I know, you were too busy kvetching to notice), a whole lot of Democrats appeared all over the media, promising to protect Social Security and Medicare, come hell or high water.

In other words, where some very narrowly focused individuals saw Obama sacrificing Social Security and Medicare to the far right to resolve a phony “crisis,” the reality was, he was attempting to tar and feather the Republicans, politically speaking, while simultaneously helping the Democrats look good to everyone outside the Tea Party.

And look at the “deal” he made. The deal pretty much guarantees the Bush tax cuts will expire at the end of 2012, and limits initial tax cuts to $22 billion before the beginning of 2013, at which time, IF we do our jobs right, Democrats will take back the House, and we’ll have put a major dent into the “Party of Hell No.” In other words, if you people would stop whining about the Democrats and start attacking the worst political problems we have, then 90% of these cuts can be reversed. No harm, no foul.

To understand politics, you have to look at the entire landscape. You have to step back and view everything, and stop reacting to isolated acts before you understand them. And by all means, you need to trust political allies and wait to see RESULTS before you pass judgment.

Three times in 7 months, the Republican Party has drawn a line in the sand, and all three times, President Obama went toe-to-toe with them and got them to accept a hell of a lot less than they said they wanted. If you believe the Orange Boner’s claim that he got 98% of what he wanted, then you are one gullible human being. He and the Republican Party got exactly dick. They got to save a little face, by agreeing to a “deal” that amounted to a clean debt ceiling bill, with a few token cuts thrown in to appease their base. The bill largely guarantees that the Bush tax cuts will expire, and it guarantees that for every dollar they agree to cut, fifty cents MUST come from defense.

I'll say that again. If they extend the Bush tax cuts beyond 2012, according to this bill, they have to cut the equivalent amount in spending and HALF of that amount will have to come from Defense. During an election year.

Seriously, if you think that’s what the Republicans envisioned as a debt ceiling “deal” heading into this thing, I wonder what they’re smoking on your home planet.

President Obama should stop reaching out to Republicans. Why does he think he can win them over?

This could very well be my favorite, because it’s so enormously clueless.

First of all, President Obama has a stellar education, and, well, see what I said about the odds of him becoming president in the first place. Do you REALLY think he reaches out to Republicans because he's starry-eyed, and he thinks that, someday, they will turn away from the dark side of the Force? If you think that, then what do you think that says about you? Arrogant? Narcissistic, perhaps?

Obama KNOWS that GOP leaders will slap his hand and drop a dookie on it besides. He COUNTS on it. The whole purpose for reaching out to Republicans is to look better than they do. See, what he knows, and some of you apparently do not, is that the vast majority of voters HATE the constant fighting and bickering. They WANT everyone to work together to get things accomplished. That means, every time he reaches out and they slap him, he gains points with the voters who actually make or break the elections.

By being the adult in the room, he makes Republicans look more and more like the petulant children they are. Yet, some on our side seem to think it makes him look weak, which demonstrates a very low maturity level, to say the least. Politics isn’t about “weak vs. strong.” The reason why Obama keeps winning, politically, is because he understands this. I hear the phrase “Obama’s playing chess while the rest of us are playing checkers,” which sounds good. But the fact is, Politics actually IS checkers. It’s pure common sense; it’s not full of difficult concepts; it’s actually very simple. The problem is, because many on our side don’t understand the game, and they feel the actual game is beneath them, they attempt to move their pieces to avoid a checkmate, but keep getting jumped by the moron who doesn’t know much, except that he’s playing checkers.

The fact of the matter is, President Obama is smarter than any of us, politically speaking, and he’s been able to accomplish a hell of a lot in spite of tremendous odds against him. And he’s done all of it without selling us out at all, despite the plaintive cries of some who seem to like to whine about every damn thing.

What's the purpose of all the vitriol against Obama? By the end of Bill Clinton’s first term, he had already sold out welfare, signed a bill that allowed a few rich folks to control our airwaves, and punted health insurance reform to the next generation, to name just a few colossal screw-ups. Yet, he never received this much grief from the left side of the political spectrum. When I started discussing politics on the Internet in late 1995, I belonged to a group of hardcore lefties (The Lying Socialist Weasels) who championed Bill Clinton as one of the greatest presidents in history. Now, many of those SAME far left liberals can’t go a day without bashing President Obama. They never give him the slightest break, despite the fact that he’s taken us away from near-depression (economically, anyway), and passed a health insurance reform bill that paves the way to a universal health care system, if we would bother to start working toward that. He also worked with Congress to restore most of the financial regulations that Clinton and the GOP had stripped away, and forced banks and credit card companies to treat consumers like consumers, rather than serfs.

And he did it all while being blocked by the most extremist Republican Party that has ever existed. Clinton got all the credit in the world for everything he did, yet the same goddamn people who give Clinton a ton of credit seem unable to give Obama any, despite the fact that Obama’s track record on progressive issues blows Clinton’s away.

What’s maddening about all of this is, as bad as you may think the Democrats and Obama might be, the current incarnation of the Republican Party is far worse. And the politics played by many on the far left has become dangerous and stupid, and it has to stop. Get smart, politically, or the assholes on the right will keep on winning, and you can forget about progressive policies ever being enacted.

Politics is about strategy, and it’s about developing a long game. Our side caused the election of 2010 to come out the way it did.

One example: our side attacked the Blue Dogs mercilessly, which is about the most politically tone deaf thing I have ever seen. Blue Dogs are conservatives. They represent conservative districts. In many cases, they represent majority-Republican districts. Now, when you work against these people, who the HELL do you think is going to replace them?

To certify the stupidity on this, I have heard a number of people say something to the effect that, given the choice between a Democrat acting like a Republican and a Republican, voters will choose the Republican. They’re paraphrasing Truman, of course, who made that statement over 60 years ago.

Am I the only one who’s noticed that the Republican Party of 1948 and that of 2011 are a bit different? The current incarnation of the Republican Party is dominated by radical right wingers. Even the few of them who could be somewhat moderate find themselves cowed by the radical elements in their party they depend on to win elections.

Therefore, when you quote Truman in 1948 to describe politics in 2011, you demonstrate your idiocy on several levels. While you can make the case that Blue Dogs are acting like Republicans of 50 years ago, they are FAR removed from the Republican Party of today. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Our side just has to get smarter, politically. Instead of constantly bitching about President Obama, follow his goddamn lead. We'll be much further ahead politically if you do that.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., a Tea Party darling, called on Obama to fire Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and quickly submit a plan to balance the budget, not just reduce deficits.

“This president has destroyed the credit rating of the United States through his failed economic policies and his inability to control government spending by raising the debt ceiling,” she said. “President Obama is destroying the foundations of the U.S. economy one beam at a time.”

A panting "sex tape" of polygamist Warren Jeffs allegedly raping his 12-year-old "spiritual bride" while uttering her name was played for a Utah jury yesterday before prosecutors rested their bigamy and sex assault case against the cult leader. As the tape ends, Jeffs proclaims: "In the name of Jesus Christ." At least one juror was seen wiping her eyes, and several covered their mouths in apparent shock as the tape was played, reports the Daily Mail. Documents presented in evidence to the jury showed that after the sex, Jeffs wrote that the girl "experienced the heavenly session; she felt the all consuming fire of heaven," reports Reuters. The tape followed two earlier ones in which Jeffs, 55, advises his young "sister wives" that they must work together to please him sexually. After the tape was played, the polygamy cult leader entered the entire Book of Mormon into evidence. Jeffs is claiming he has a religious right to multiple, underage wives, which will bring him "exultation" in heaven. The tapes, preserved by Jeffs as "priestly records," were seized in a 2008 raid on the Yearning for Zion polygamist compound in Texas, according to prosecutors. He faces up to 119 years in prison if convicted of the numerous charges against him.

The Book of Mormon gives this monster the RIGHT to rape children? Good God Mormons, do you ALL believe this, or is it just the perverted believing this crap??

Thankfully we get to see the results of a jury making the right decision, putting a monster behind bars so children can be children. But can they? While everyone is fixated on how terrible this debt-ceiling deal is for Democrats, If one pauses long enough to really analyze the details and all of their implications, one finds that, in the long term, this deal is actually wildly in favor of the President’s position.
The truth is — there actually is revenue included in this deal, and here I will briefly defer to Ezra Klein:

In a presentation to his members, Boehner says (pdf) that the rules governing the committee “effectively [make] it impossible for Joint Committee to increase taxes.” Specifically, he’s arguing that using the Congressional Budget Office’s “current-law baseline” makes tax increases impossible, as that baseline assumes the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, and so, if you touched taxes at all, you’d have to raise taxes by more than $3.6 trillion or the CBO would say you were cutting taxes and increasing the deficit.
Confused? That seems to be the point. Boehner is misleading his members to make them think taxes are impossible under this deal. But make no mistake: The Joint Committee could raise taxes in any number of ways. It could close loopholes and cap tax expenditures. It could impose a value-added tax, or even a tax on carbon. The Congressional Budget Office would score all of this as reducing the deficit under a current-law baseline. The only thing that wouldn’t reduce the deficit is going after part of the Bush tax cuts. That means they’re likely to go untouched in this deal.

In case you don’t understand — allow me to elaborate.
John Boehner is selling the current CBO baseline to his caucus to pass this bill, and the current baseline includes an expiration of the Bush Tax Cuts. The only way for the Bush Cuts to be extended is if the “super congress” committee offsets it with tax hikes or tax reform in other areas. Going after the Bush Tax Cuts in the committee would not count as reducing the deficit, because the baseline already assumes they will expire.
John Boehner knows this, but most members of his caucus and, admittedly, many members of the Democratic caucus don’t realize it. I didn’t put two and two together myself until late last night.
If you view this deal from the perspective that there is a guarantee the Bush Tax Cuts will expire, then suddenly the deal swings wildly in favor of President Obama.
The president offered John Boehner a 4:1, cuts:revenue deal, but what he ended up getting instead is a 1:2, cuts:revenue deal.
The Bush Tax Cuts account for roughly $3.7 trillion dollars in additional revenue over 10 years. The spending-cuts tentatively agreed to in the deal account for only $2.7 trillion dollars over 10 years. This means there is $1 trillion more dollars in revenue contained inside the deal over 10 years than there are spending cuts.
Furthermore, the spending cuts contained inside the bill do not come into effect until 2013, after the Bush Tax Cuts expire, meaning the revenue and cuts come into effect at roughly the same time.
If the rabid members of John Boehner’s caucus realized this, they would probably be calling for his head.
It’s no coincidence that President Obama came out last night and bluntly said this is not the deal he wanted. It’s no coincidence that John Boehner and Eric Cantor both told their caucus that President Obama “caved.” They have to say this, because if it appears that President Obama got anything in the deal, then suddenly it can’t pass the House of Representatives. There is nothing they hate more than giving the president a victory, so it has to appear as if he got nothing, and they have been pretty convincing.
President Obama knew this would look bad for his administration in the short term, but he took that risk in exchange for winning further along down the road. As I mentioned above, none of this policy actually comes into effect until 2013. Not even the spending cuts. Only 1% of the spending cuts will be felt in 2012.
This deal masterfully accomplishes the task of kicking the can down the road for the Republicans without actually appearing so unless you really dig deep into it, and it leaves most of the details up to the next session of Congress beginning in January of 2013.
We all owe the president a great deal of respect for being willing to take the political hit in the short term to save us in the long term.

the loudest screeching noise you hear coming from Krugman and the ideologue Left is, of course, Medicare. Oh, no, the President is agreeing to a Medicare trigger!!! Oh noes!!! Everybody freak out right now! But let's look at the deal again, shall we? From the White House fact sheet, here is what the President actually agreed to.

Consistent With Past Practice, Sequester Would Be Divided Equally Between Defense and Non-Defense Programs and Exempt Social Security, Medicaid, and Low-Income Programs: Consistent with the bipartisan precedents established in the 1980s and 1990s, the sequester would be divided equally between defense and non-defense program, and it would exempt Social Security, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, programs for low-income families, and civilian and military retirement. Likewise, any cuts to Medicare would be capped and limited to the provider side.

Read that again. That's what the media and the whiners are not telling you. The President agreed to no Medicare benefit cuts in the "trigger." None. The cuts, if they automatically happen, would go to whom? The providers. Who are these providers? Doctors, hospitals, clinics, Medical device makers, service providers, drug manufacturers. Who do you think they mostly donate to in the political season? The entire pressure on these Medicare cuts are on the private medical (and pharmaceutical) industry! So let's ask that question again. The Medicare "trigger" is a trigger really from whom again? As a matter of fact, both big triggers (Defense and Medicare provider cuts) are triggers for the Republicans!

As it turns out, if you look at the details, the President essentially gave up almost nothing in the triggers. John Boehner, as usual, put himself between two triggers (three, if you count the clock ticking on the Bush tax cuts), both bad for his party. McConnell is basically trying to sell his surrender pig with a little lipstick on. And Boehner went dancing to his conservative House morons about how great this deal is for them. But then by now, we should all have learned that John Boehner is very bad at his job, and that President Obama always eats his lunch, and leaves him there holding the teabag.

Despite our strong belief that the government does not and should not operate like a business, many on the so-called "Left" seem to be suffering from the delusion that the President is a unitary executive, and can do whatever he pleases. If he really wants to do something, he can do it, the argument goes, thereby attributing anything that does not get done to the President's unwillingness to do it, rather than legislative reality or any other extraneous factor. It allows people to flat out ignore the fact that the President is but the head of one branch of government, restrained by the other branches, as well as the Constitutional limits on his power. But the same people are also always the first to scream that any use of legitimate executive power is itself abusive!
You have heard it all before. A, B, C didn't get done because President Obama didn't really want to do it. Or he didn't fight for it. He didn't pound podium enough. He didn't twist enough arms. He didn't do this. He didn't do that. If only he had gone to Maine and verbally beat the Maine Republican senators over the head, we would have the public option in health reform. If only he had issued an executive order rather than go through the legislative process, DADT would be history on Day 2 of his presidency. And I suppose he was supposed to bullypulpit and podium-pound into submission all 90 senators and the overwhelming majority of the House who voted to block the closure of Guantanamo.

President Obama was elected to govern the Whole country, not just the selfish Me Me Me Lefties, AS were the House members who we so freely criticize. Those Tea Party Freshmen MUST get real, they are not the ONLY group in Congress allowed to legislate! There will be NO VOTE on Boehners debt limit bill tonight, and who is to blame? Well the Tea Party Freshmen of course! The Republican party embraced the teabaggers back when Barack Obama was elected and the baggers became a force to be reckoned with. But tonight, what's going on in the heads of the more sane, more moderate, old school Republicans? I can just imagine! Those teabaggers came into the Halls of Congress, off the street like a Joe the Plummer, no qualifications, no experience, no idea what it takes to sit in a Congressional seat...what a pity the GOP was so terrified of our intelligent president that they had to embrace a bunch of morons thinking it would save their dying party, but all it's doing is killing them faster.....

John Boehner thinks he can get the votes, tomorrow. I have absolutely no confidence Tan Man. Those teabaggers are a stubborn group, they don't really care about you or the Republican Party. They don't fully understand what the debt ceiling vote means. I see a severe case of buyers remorse, what a pity...The Republican Party is imploding.....

Tonight I am thankful for the Democrats in the Senate, they will save us......I'm also thankful for my President and I believe he will save us.....What about the Republicans, Mitch McConnell, old school McConnell, will he help steer the boat?
