Please Mr. President...

I want to hear my president tell the people of this country that he WILL NOT let Armageddon happen next week.  August 2nd, my sons birthday, the debt ceiling must be raised. Politicususa has a great post up, a must read for all the citizens who choose to listen to the moron GOP and the idiot Grover Norquist....

Thomas Bishop at Politicususa says this....
if some kind of agreement to raise the debt ceiling is not reached now, the United States will default on its loan obligations — triggering a cataclysmic evil act against the American people that will far exceed the pain and suffering inflicted by the Great Depression.
In the first place, it has never happened before. This would be the first time in United States’ history that the U.S. would default on its loan obligations. The debt is not just numbers; it is real money that has been lent with real expectations of returned payment. The debt is owed to multi-national banks, foreign countries, and the public itself through treasuries. If an individual defaults on a loan, the debt does not disappear. Instead, the bank takes the loss. If the United States goes into default, much of the world will suddenly face the prospect of losing about $14 trillion dollars. The results will be catastrophic.

Mitch McConnell says the bipartisan leadership in Congress is committed to working on new legislation that will prevent default while substantially reducing Washington spending.  Boehner says
the GOP has a short term plan but President Obama has said over and over he will veto a short term plan.  Why is Obama opposed to a short-term plan? Market stability for one. Then there is this.

So, what kind of game is the GOP playing?  The biggest game plan is this debt ceiling vote intertwined with deficit reduction, spending cuts, entitlement dismantling, or NO vote to raise the debt ceiling! NO to new revenues, NO to ending tax breaks, NO to tax hikes of any kind, NO, NO, NO... At NO time do the GOPers say they will compromise to save our country and her people. They NEVER talk about the American people, never...

As of tonight there is no deal, CNN says the two sides want an agreement before Sunday, well Sunday is coming fast....I'm getting nervous

I am with you. I am getting nervous. I keep hoping the President is using brilliant political strategy but I am not sure.

It drives me crazy that he does not mobilize the American people. Since polls show most of us on his side, I don't understand why he has not had an vening address where he explains in plain English exactly what is at stake and what will happen then tell people to contact their representatives to raise the ceiling. Plain, clean, simple.

That is why it makes me nervous.

I'd like to strongly recommend this blog. I find her analysis of Obama's strategy fascinating, and reassuring.

Note that during yesterday's press conference, Obama expressed openness to the McConnell plan (which would give him the power to raise the debt ceiling unilaterally, in exchange for allowing Congressional Republicans some opportunities for empty posturing to satisfy the teabaggers). If all else fails, it's an option to save the day.

Thanks Infidel, I will spend some time reading the blog tomorrow, reassurance is something we all need right about now!

I've thought for awhile now the president will take it upon himself to raise the debt ceiling with a CLEAN bill. I think he'll be forced to, it doesn't look like the GOP is budging. It amazes me they don't read polls, they just go forward in their own little world, just them and the Kochs! :-) They are on the losing side, and don't even realize it. What is wrong with them??

Ligtstar, keep believing the president is using brilliant political strategy, I believe it! The day Boehner walked out of the talks and Obama had that press conference, that was the day he took it to the people. He did explain it in plain English. I don't know what more he could have said.

We have just one more week and it'll all be over. My fingers are crossed for the brilliant one!

I happen to agree with that conclusion, unfortunately, to my surprise, many (mostly Tea Baggers) do not.
Fear is what usually wins a game of chicken, or who will blink first.
If people do not believe in disaster consequences, then the fear is not there and they will not blink.
I've enjoyed the way the President has played the Republicans, and believe the debt ceiling will be raised without any agreement on spending, or tax cuts.

"So, what kind of game is the GOP playing?"

A game of brinkmanship driven by ideology and the lust for power. Just like all political parties. Even the founding fathers understood this.

Don't worry Sue, the repubs in power know that to let the USA default would insure their future irrelevancy and dash hopes of a return to the big house and possible leadership of both houses of Congress.

There will be a deal. Of sorts.

The Klanbagger Kaukus is comprised of stupid men, sent there by stupid voters. The very voters who will take among the first hits if a default occurs.

If something isn't done, within 6 months you will see secessions. Count on it. The thing is, I don't think a lot of the Klanbagger Kaukus cares. They are hateful people, and they would gladly pull it down around them in flames if it meant that what they hate gets pulled down as a part of the process.
