The People's Budget

Thanks to Dusty and her post on the Congressional Progressive Caucus, I wanted to look once more at the budget proposal and post it for all to read. The Progressives in Congress are hard at work for the middle class, with this budget and with their tour across America, which Dusty talks about.

Can you read this budget and then compare it to Paul Ryan's plan and not sit there dumbfounded, wondering why in the hell our leaders in Washington aren't falling all over themselves to get a budget like this implemented??  I can't...

Budget of the Congressional Progressive Caucus
Fiscal Year 2012
The People’s Budget eliminates the deficit in 10 years, puts Americans back to work and restores our economic competitiveness. The People’s Budget recognizes that in order to compete, our nation needs every American to be productive, and in order to be productive we need to raise our skills to meet modern needs.

Our Budget Eliminates the Deficit and Raises a $31 Billion Surplus In Ten Years
Our budget protects Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid and responsibly eliminates the deficit by targeting its main drivers: the Bush Tax Cuts, the wars overseas, and the causes and effects of the recent recession.

Our Budget Puts America Back to Work & Restores America’s Competitiveness
• Trains teachers and restores schools; rebuilds roads and bridges and ensures that users help pay for them
• Invests in job creation, clean energy and broadband infrastructure, housing and R&D programs

Our Budget Creates a Fairer Tax System
Ends the recently passed upper-income tax cuts and lets Bush-era tax cuts expire at the end of 2012
Extends tax credits for the middle class, families, and students
Creates new tax brackets that range from 45% starting at $1 million to 49% for $1 billion or more
• Implements a progressive estate tax
• Eliminates corporate welfare for oil, gas, and coal companies; closes loopholes for multinational corporations
• Enacts a financial crisis responsibility fee and a financial speculation tax on derivatives and foreign exchange

Our Budget Protects Health
• Enacts a health care public option and negotiates prescription payments with pharmaceutical companies
• Prevents any cuts to Medicare physician payments for a decade

Our Budget Safeguards Social Security for the Next 75 Years
• Eliminates the individual Social Security payroll cap to make sure upper income earners pay their fair share
• Increases benefits based on higher contributions on the employee side
Our Budget Brings Our Troops Home
• Responsibly ends our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to leave America more secure both home and abroad
• Cuts defense spending by reducing conventional forces, procurement, and costly R&D programs

Our Budget’s Bottom Line
• Deficit reduction of $5.6 trillion
• Spending cuts of $1.7 trillion
• Revenue increase of $3.9 trillion
• Public investment $1.7 trillion

Byron York, The Examiner says this about the budget...

How can such fiscal miracles be accomplished? By tax increases that would make even some top Democrats gasp. Perhaps the most extraordinary is the caucus plan to raise the Social Security tax to cover nearly all of a taxpayer's income. Right now, the tax is imposed on the first $106,000 of earnings. For people who make more than that, the caucus would tax a full 90 percent of income -- no matter how high it goes.  so, your argument IS WHAT???
The caucus would raise the Social Security tax that employers pay as well.
The caucus would create three new individual tax brackets for the highest incomes, topping out at 47 percent. It would also raise the capital gains tax, the estate tax and corporate taxes. It would create something called a "financial crisis responsibility fee" and a "financial speculation tax." And of course it would repeal the Bush tax cuts.  Again.. SO, what's wrong with THAT??
As if anyone needed reminding, the "People's Budget" is proof that the liberal idea of budget balancing is tax, tax, tax. If you're looking for spending cuts, you'll find just one really big one: national defense. Isn't that funny cuz the American people AGREE!! The liberals would end "overseas contingency operations" -- the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan -- starting in 2013. YAY, not soon enough tho!!  Is this guy serious?? They would save more money by "reducing strategic capabilities, conventional forces, procurement, and research & development programs." In other words, they would gut the United States' ability to defend itself, today and long into the future.  LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!!
What would the liberals spend money on? The "People's Budget" is essentially a newer and bigger stimulus bill. Grijalva and Ellison pledge to "invest $1.45 trillion in job creation, early childhood, K-12 and special education, quality child care, energy and broadband infrastructure, housing, and research and development," along with billions more for stimulus like road and other transportation programs.  GASP!!! Imagine THAT, a budget that puts people to work AND reduces the deficit!!

What the hell is wrong with these right wingers?? President Obama, this budget is the one we NEED!!

It will be a cold day in hell if this thing gets passed by the corporate congress we have now...but it has been mighty cold lately in Milwaukee, so...

If we truly had a liberal mainstream media, The People's Budget would be all over the front page of every newspaper and the lead story on every TV news cast in the U.S.

Maybe Sarah is right when she calls it the lamestream media...but it is lame because it is RIGHT not because it is LEFT!

Glad to see you are spreading the word ;) I hope people will check out the national tour this summer when it comes to 14 cities nationwide. Tell the Progressive Caucus you support them and what they are trying to do. Too bad Obama doesn't.

Everyone needs to put this info on their blog..except of course your trolls.

Les Carpenter said...

Okay, I won't post it on my blog. I wan't to give you guys a fighting chance. Cause it ain't gonna fly. But not for the reasons you think it won't.

TOM said...

RN,
What an ego! You think if you did post it on your blog (that no one reads) that alone would sink it?
Again (no details) don't tell us why it won't work (debate ideas) just state that it will not.
Don't bother debating serious ideas, just post another idiot article about Wiener to headline your blog.
You truly are just a garbage dealer, troll blogger.
Hey, Mr. Convictions, how much in donations have you got from begging for money on your blog? How much in ad revenues have you made from those lame ads on your blog?
You blog garbage and try to make money at it. Is this the kind of independent earning you think all Americans should do?
I like people who have true convictions. Some even work for (God forbid) non-profit companies, because they serve the needs of the people.
Sorry Sue, I just cannot resist, he's such an easy target.

Tom - Your take on RN's blog sounds a lot like what Palin does for a living. No debate, no ideas, just give me some easy money.

Come to think of it, those are things that TRUE Libertarians are opposed to.

Flying Junior said...

I'm with you RN. These dems are looking more and more like Georgius Tertius every damn day. First the income tax. Then Social Security and the marijuana tax. Then, (gasp) the Medicare Act. Now the Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act coupled with the Consumer Protection Act. If this congress doesn't repeal all of these oppresive measures by 2013, I'm simply pulling up stakes to go start a ranch in Somalia where a wealthy man can enter into a social contract voluntarily. Nobody's forcing me to do anything every again. I've had enough of this United States with Model Ts for everyone and superhighways, libraries, streetlights, power grids, telephone lines and water mains, trash collection, police and fire departments and all of that unnecessary bullshit.

Sue said...

you go FJ!! Oh and nicely said...

hey C, ya know Palin has been kinda MIA, wonder why??

I don't mind you bitch slapping the RN every once in awhile Tom. And RN don't be saying I'm favoring Tom, it's my prerogative...

I agree Dusty, and if the president can't bring himself to support a super budget such as this, by the progressives who put him over the top, then I will be sorely pissed to the max. 'Course not so pissed I would vote for a rethuglican....

Jerry that's the truth, why is this not being talked about by the MSNBC shows? Mary makes a great point too, The left and right in Congress seem like one in the same when it comes to budgets. The left must break away and start showing us they are different with Obama taking the lead. Hopefully with this tour happening we'll start to see progress from the progressives...

Lisa, in my part of the world there were a lot of shovel ready jobs and they did start them, complete them and/or are still working them. So your catchall comment is pure crap. Try providing a link to somewhere reputable that proves what you say when you make stupid general comments like that....which is about all you are good for now that I think about it.

I'd love to stick a shovel clean up her...oh never mind...she ain't worth it...

Why are people dissing RN's blog? RN is a extremely influential libertarian blogger, as evidenced by the fact that he's on a government watch list. Barack Obama himself views RN's blog as a threat to his presidency. Don't believe me... read all about it here. Even RN's son, who is a progressive, is worried for his father's safety. RN is truly a brave man... he continues to blog even though his actions may have marked him for elimination (by Seal Team 6 perhaps?)

BTW, I am onboard completely in regards to the People's budget. I do doubt that the President will get behind it though... it's just too sensible.

Which is what I think RN is talking about. We think it won't fly because Republicans will oppose it, but the real reason it won't fly is because Democrats won't get behind it.

Dave Dubya said...

We'd see, and hear of, more of the People's Budget if we had a Peoples' Party. The Democratic Party has too many Republicrats in it to function as a viable opposition to the power of Big Money.

The left needs to take a lesson from the extreme Right and regain influence within a party.

Sue said...

excuse me w, but I had to laugh out loud cuz I thought you were sending me back to your blog for an amusing satire post about a libertarian Dad and his progressive son who was trying to protect his Dad from the Feds!

I knew RN was referring to the Dems when he spoke about the Peoples Budget being dead in the water.

Sadly Dave you are correct about the Democrats. It's very frustrating to watch our party move right of center when we know the country doesn't want that from them.

Unknown said...

The left needs to take a lesson from the extreme Right and regain influence within a party. The D's like to think they are a party that allows all brands of politics to be included..but it's bullshit of course.

Bill Clinton hated liberals so much he tried to blow them out of the water when he headed the DLC..which hates liberals w/a passion.

The DCCC isn't a fan of liberals either as witnessed by the fact that in 08 and earlier elections they refused to help fund specific candidates that they deemed..too left of center..by telling them that funds were in short supply and they would rather use the money in races where the candidate had a 'better chance' of winning.

The DLC likes to label itself as 'moderate'. They think we liberals want to control the agenda, which wouldn't bode well for rich folks and Big Corporations.

They are right. We do want to wrestle the power away from them. Damn skippy mutha fuckas.

I would like to think that liberals/progressives could do like the teabaggers have done but I really don't see that happening Dave because the truth is that the D's are really just as bad as the R's when it comes to pandering to The Corporatocracy and what THEY want.

The Democratic Party is just better at hiding that fact from the majority of America's voters that refuse to vote for an R.

Dave Dubya said...

Dusty's point gets all they way through to the core. We now have Government Inc., thanks to Big Money Inc. buying up our Republican Inc. and Democratic Inc. Parties.

When will the burdens and austerity of USA Inc. be enough to activate the public? Perhaps we see it beginning in Wisconsin. When we have masses of people with the same message in every capitol on the same day, then we will have the movement and momentum to surge for democracy.

Unknown said...

OMG..are you serious Lisa? That is where you get your information? Yahoo? LMFAO! Nothing supporting anything..just a friggin line of someone spouting some bullshit about a supposed Obama quote?

There is no timeline, no timeframe..no nothing. Why am I surprised that is all we get from you..a link to a useless Yahoo Answers..too funny!

Unknown said...

Here Lisa, let me do the heavy lifting for you. ProPublica.org has rec'd a Pulitzer for their investigative reporting. They have spent a lot of time and money tracking the stimulus bucks, when they were spent, how they were spent, etc. A few links to their pieces:

http://www.propublica.org/article/did-the-white-house-meet-its-stimulus-goal

http://www.propublica.org/ion/stimulus

The system the government set up wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know for a fact that california was the first to stick a shovel in the ground after receiving their share of stimulus money. ProPublica has that article up somewhere in their database on this issue. You can figure that out.

The Govt set goals as to when the majority of the stim bucks would be spent/used/etc. They partially met that goal but it was a pretty big goal..even you have to admit that..or not..knowing how you are..a basher of all things Democratic/Obama.

Holy Shit! You can beg on your blog via paypal??!! Why the F@ck have I been wasting so much time on 52nd and Sheridan?

I really can't understand how the tea-idiots can rally up enough support for a separate party, but the liberals, the masters of this kind of shit, fail to form some kind of progressive or labor or coffee or chai or machiatto "party." At least something to put pressure on the damn democrats! To say, "Hey backstabbers! Come back to the left or you will lose your jobs! See those numbnuts sitting across the aisle from you?" ..."Yeah? Those idiot tea party members, the ones picking their noses and scratching their asses while tying to remember to breathe, they got their jobs because their party was too elite to listen to its own people. This is how it starts! So shape up!"

Sue said...

Mary, there are Progressive movements, really big ones, plus the coffee party...the big fuckin problem is the lamestream media does not care to talk about them, they talk nonfuckinstop about the teabaggers tho don't they?? Ya know those boogie pickin, America/government hating rednecks who hatefornoreason President Obama?

That wasn't MY point, it was yours. I gave you plenty of linkage as to how the govt did w/it came to 'shovel ready' projects.

Did you bother to look? Or are facts something you don't give a fuck about? Just Obama bashing?

She is a freakin idiot and a troll who takes over liberal blog threads with her fuckin rightwing/Fox talking points. You are wasting precious time on her cuz she will be deleted. I have no patience for her and her stupidity.

You all already have a base right here to form your own...

"Peoples Party of the United Communist States of the World"

I'd say go for it. It just might fail!

Dave Dubya said...

Les,
There's a vast difference between a communist party and one dedicated to democracy. We need the latter, as both major parties, albeit one more than the other, now work for their Big Money string pullers.

Sounds like you have a problem with democracy.

Les Carpenter said...

Dave --- There you go again. I am for individualism and liberty.

Remember, the constitution was framed with this in mind...

...to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority...

Hence a nation of laws.

What progressive advocate is increasing influence and control by the state. Connect the dots and eventually you have an obvious picture.

By the way Bush 2 was just a different flavor of statism and state control.

Put Em together and you have... BHO.

Dave Dubya said...

Les,
There you go again with the red-baiting.

Do you assume I oppose liberty? I am a firearm-owning, tax-paying civil libertarian.

What tyranny of the majority? We live in nation of the golden rulers. Those with the gold make the rules. It is a tyranny by the economic elites. Since money is free speech and corporations are persons, they do all the talking.
This is antithetical to democracy. There’s no comparable political clout for 99% of the American people.

Neither party advocates for the majority while they fall to their knees before Big Money.

Free speech and non-living “personhood” should not be defined by money poured into the peoples’ political process. This is the change our democracy needs to survive.

Again, you seem to shun democracy in favor of the golden rulers.

Can you tell me I’m wrong here?

Les Carpenter said...

Dave - More on the subject coming soon to a site near you.

PS: Assume nothing.

Wow. Is it on gents? Today is cut day at the US Open. I am outta here.

Ya'll have a simply lovely Friday. :)

Dave Miller said...

Les, as someone who calls himself for individualism and liberty, let me ask you a couple of questions.

They are not "gotchas" but they are straight yes or no.

Does the "state," in this case public schools, have a right to require kids to be vaccinated to attend those public schools. Or is that government infringing on someone's rights?

If someone goes to a hospital, and has no insurance or way to pay at that moment, does the hospital have a right to turn that patient away, even if it means the patient will die.

Is it communist/socialist or any other ist you call us "lefty's" when we advocate for the removal of farm subsidies and price guarantees for that industry?

I'll await your answers.

Dave Miller said...

Dusty... Re facts and Lisa...

I once asked her on her own blog where she found the information she used...

She responded that she used a mixture of true and false facts!

I have been trying to get her to define a false fact ever since. Not soon after that, she closed her blog down and then restarted it under another address. I've always wondered if she did that to try and remove her "false fact" statement, which to, defines the extreme rights thinking process.

Today another right leaning blogger told me essentially that since millions of Americans are birthers, it must be true. People would not believe something like that if it were false... and she was serious!

So there you have it. If you believe it, it is true! A true false fact...

The CDM said...

Dave, that's freakin' priceless. I knew she was a lying sack, had no idea she would actually admit it to someone.

Les Carpenter said...

Dave ...

1) Yes
2) For those who are indigent Yes. For Illegals yes and then sent them home
3) No

Les Carpenter said...

By send them home I mean depart them.

Jerry Critter said...

RN,
I hope you mean deport them. Taking them apart (depart) seems a little severe.

Flying Junior said...

Q. If someone goes to a hospital, and has no insurance or way to pay at that moment, does the hospital have a right to turn that patient away, even if it means the patient will die?

A. For those who are indigent, yes. For Illegals, yes and then send them home, (I mean deport them.)

So your answer in both instances is yes the hospital has a right to turn away a dying patient. But in the case of the alien you would have to deport them quickly? Remember, they could possibly die in a Immigration and Customs detention facility.

Or did you really mean to say that the hospital should go ahead and treat indigents and aliens regardless of their ability to pay, and only bums should be allowed to die? In which case, there may be a glimmer of humanity in you.

Les Carpenter said...

Jerry - Yes I meant deport. Was at work and had limited time.

Thanks for picking the typo up and pointing it out.

Les Carpenter said...

FJ - I meant the hospital should treat the indigent.

I meant the hospital should treat the illegal, and when able to withstand the trip deport them. And I would add their entire family as well.

And yes, I have no compassion for the "bums" of which you speak. They are parasites.

The Prophet Dervish Z Sanders said...

RN, I do NOT believe that our fellow human beings are parasites! These people may be suffering from mental illness, or may just be down on their luck -- and fallen so far they can't pull themselves back up. I think it is society's DUTY to provide for these people.

Anyway, the cost is nothing compared to what we spent bailing out the banksters... now those are the true parasites!

Sue said...

w, this is the difference between the left and the right...they don't believe we as a society should take care of each other out of duty, for them it's a dog eat dog world and your life is what you make it. If you are down on your luck do not look to the government or god-forbid the taxpayers to help you out.....well except if you are a big bank.....

Unknown said...

RN is a true rightwinger. Calling a general part of the population parasites is wrong on every level..at least it is for the segment of us that believe helping others isn't wrong. We aren't offering them a lifetime on 'the dole', we are giving them a hand-up.

How can anyone call human's parasites? Now Corporations..those are the parasites upon our society. They take and take..and then send jobs overseas, their sole goal is to make money, regardless of the cost to our society.

since you categorized me first {erroneously} I felt it fine to do the same.

Dave Miller said...

Les, how do square the view that the state does have the power to require kids to be vaccinated with a viewpoint that says government should leave people alone?

If it is not communist/socialistic for democrats to oppose federal subsidies and price guarantees for crops, is the desiring to defend and support those practices communist/socialistic?

As for your view on the hospital question, all I can say is at least you have the honesty to say that. Most GOP partisans and even libertarians will not openly answer that question, as evidenced by Ron Paul at the debate.

I however do not want to live in a country where a majority of people might choose to exercise that right, although i can always think of a few people to which I hope that happens.

Present company excepted...
