nothing new here, just deceiving the people with debt ceiling hysterics and Reagan tax increase lies...

Not shocking, just typical......The 4 Republicans  in Congressional leadership roles voted to raise the debt ceiling 19 times under GW Bush, the debt limit was in fact increased by almost 4 trillion dollars!  So now under our Democrat Barack Obama the Thugs are demanding spending cuts before they entertain the notion of a vote to raise the debt ceiling. What they are doing is pure politics and the country knows it. They will not only place our economy in peril but the world economy too. Now if you believe spending cuts will fix everything you are highly misinformed and misguided!  Surely the GOP knows that, afterall there were NO demands for drastic spending cuts with previous debt ceiling votes, in May 2003 the debt limit increase passed the Senate the same day as the $350 billion Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.  They are playing games with our economic survival, games they NEVER played with President Bush. Their plan to bring down President Obama by bringing down our economy will only backfire in 2012.

We all know this, it's not shocking news either, but I saw it on Facebook and wanted to put it on the blog because it reinforces my opinion Republicans are hypocrites and liars.... In 1982 Reagan's administration implemented the first of SEVERAL tax increases in order to REDUCE THE DEFICIT!  ( Actually Saint Ronnie raised taxes in seven of the eight years that he was President.) Even then the Republican lawmakers and conservative economists said the tax increases would hurt the economy and hinder growth, but Bruce Bartlett (former Reagan and Bush Sr. economic official) noted, “It would be hard to find an economic forecast that was more wrong in every respect“:

There was no increase in the rate of inflation, which was exactly the same in 1983 and 1984 as it was in 1982. The unemployment rate fell from 10.6 percent in December 1982 to 8.1 percent by December 1983 and 7.1 percent in December 1984.

The 1982 tax increase is the largest peacetime tax increase in U.S. history. And the same thing happened around President Bill Clinton’s 1993 tax increase: dire warnings from Republicans about economic Armageddon, followed by a booming economy.

As Center for American Progress Director of Tax and Budget Policy Michael Linden noted, over the last 50 years, lower top tax rates have coincided with weaker growth, while the strongest growth was during periods when the top tax rate was substantially higher than it is now. As he explained, “These numbers do not mean that higher rates necessarily lead to higher growth. But the central tenet of modern conservative economics is that a lower top marginal tax rate will result in more growth, and these numbers do show conclusively that history has not been kind to that theory.”
Of course, it’s not really surprising that the GOP has no idea what went on during Reagan’s term. After all, House Republicans scoffed and rolled their eyes when presented with the fact that taxes were higher under Reagan than they are under Obama.

SEE?  Hypocrites AND liars, they know it but could give 2 shits.... this is why I despise them!

Thus, they know exactly how to solve this most unstable of economic times.

1. Raise taxes on the wealthy.

2. Fund public service jobs.

3. Increase aid to those at the bottom so they can spend money and increase demand.

4. Fix Social Security for 100 years by removing the cap on earnings, and forever by assessing FICA taxes on all income including investments.

Exactly the steps they will under no circumstances ever take (and the steps the people should be in the street demanding daily).

And those at the bottom without decent educations or much logical ability continue to elect them.

Thanks for continuing the reporting!

I have a republican buddy. We were listening to President Obama's reality check on the concept of the government paying its bills that he so kindly reviewed for the delusional among us who believe that perhaps the U.S. could go into default, postpone payments or maybe go "interest only." Now there's a republican idea if I ever heard one. I particularly liked the part where Obama pointed out that this money has already been spent to meet obligations that were passed or created by congress itself. My buddy was sure that the republicans were going to respond with a complete budget package. (I guess as opposed to the Ryan, "political manifesto" budget we saw several weeks ago.) They trotted out that Rand Paul idiot calling for a balanced budget amendment and a couple of other political hacks who could actually recite certain basic numbers on the deficit and the debt. I'm not sure where my friend really got the idea that the republicans were going to say anything serious, but he does watch FOX.

He left the room in disgust. How is it that I actually know one of the last cool republicans in existence? For one thing, he is ninety-five years old!

nice story FJ....It is sad the Republican party has gone the way of the teabaggers, they have totally lost ALL common sense and are taking us off the deep end without a bit of guilt or bother...I don't know a single conservative with a mind of their own and one who will say their party has sunk to a new low. They have every intention of killing us all...which doesn't phase them because they are "saved"

I watched for just a few minutes a Fox Bimbo talking with scummy icky Hannity, she said Dems and Obama have had 2 and a half yrs to "fix" the economy and their policies have failed to do that.

Bwahaaahaaaahaaaa!!! Sorry it's still shocking to me people watch those morons...

decades of failed thuglican policies have destroyed our country and those fuckwads are complaining that Obama and dems can't "fix" the GOP disasters in 2 and a half yrs!!!

SHUT UP AND GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR WAY AND WE CAN GET TO WORK FOR AMERICA!!!!!!!!

Sue, this is why I told you that every now and then you need to watch that network. It gives you the full perspective of just what the hell they are saying(selling...same thing).

It's always a good idea to watch the opposition and call them on their bullshit, especially when you have great reference material that you just got through observing.

Sue,

That FOX woman apparently is blissfully unaware that the American people DO NOT blame Mr. Obama for the economic problems we are having. They blame Bush first, as he should be blamed, then Wall St., then Congress.

One in TWELVE Americans say it's Obama's doing. A distinct minority--and probably all FAUX NOOZ watchers.

The American people consistently DO NOT put the entire blame [not even half] for this wretched economy on Obama's shoulders.

How could anyone do anything to get the economy moving when the opposition's goal is to make a sitting president fail--and by extension the country fail--by opposing every suggestion he makes to right the economy?

Congress even rejected a "tax holiday" for small businesses--something they themselves approved of in the past.

We have to hammer home that the GOP is the party of NO! and the party that wishes to injure America for political reasons.

Boehner: WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

The GOP took control of the House in January after promising that jobs! was their number one priority, and they proceeded to defund Planned Parenthood!

For once, I really saw the Obama that I wanted to see from day one. Calling out Congress the way he did was LONG overdue. It's about time he stopped playing peacemaker with the party that doesn't want any part of it.

I just loved the republican response, more pissing and moaning which was exactly what he called them out for along with the extended leave time.

Of course the troll would agree with a hack. Hacks are attracted to other hacks.

Meanwhile, Michele Bachmann will never be president; and Sarah Palin's poll numbers are in single digits.

LOL!

C, I do peek in every once in awhile but can only stomach a few minutes at a time.

Shaw I saw the polls, and even tonight the rightwing strategists say it's the economy voters will base their decision on in 2012. Well if Obama would get more forceful with the bully pulpit and the media would point out the GOP America destroying policies with more clarity, I would feel more confident.

I'm not happy with myself, but I will admit I was yelling at the TV when Obama had the press conference. I called him a pussy cuz he was too calm, cool, and collected. Those despicable thugs are playing political games and the president beats around the bush almost in a pleading voice telling them "what they SHOULD be doing", yea like those idiots are gonna say "well gee golly Mr. President, you're right, we'll be good and give ya what ya want"....it's killing me!!! I know, I know, it's Obamas nature not to bully, but when he does point out the GOP hypocrisy he seems apologetic when he does it! I hate that!

Sue: What they are doing is pure politics and the country knows it.

You'd think so, but I encountered a self-described Democrat today who argued that "extremists" in both parties are responsible for the debt ceiling negotiations stalemate. Naturally I disagreed. In fact, I felt very strongly that the lie needed to be countered, so I composed a rebuttal for my blog that I titled, "The Idiocy of Moderation".

Will the Republican plan to bring down President Obama by bringing down our economy backfire? I hope so, but I'm not sure.

Sue said...

will the GOP plan backfire?? Well if the idiot righties would watch and read something other than Fox and RW rags then MAYBE 2 or 3 of them would see the light, then tell another 2 or 3 and so on and so on til the whole country GETS IT!! The Republiscum Party are dangerous, they want the power and will do anything to get it, even bringing down the world economy!! They even admit to it! Wake up idiots!!

Sue,

Perhaps this piece from Andrew Sullivan's blog will give you a different take on Mr. Obama's presser:

This piece is from Andrew Sullivan's blog:

"When presidents succeed in presiding over great change, they do so by recognizing an existing opportunity, not squeezing one from the stone of existing opposition. Obama correctly saw that 60 Democrats in the Senate and 240 in the House had cleared the way for health-care reform. Bush realized that 9/11 opened the door for the Iraq War. Clinton understood that the preferences of the Republican Congress and the economic growth of the ’90s created space for a Democrat to balance the budget and reform welfare. Reagan sensed that stagnation had prepared the American people for a radically different economic philosophy.

FDR knew to push America’s intervention into World War II by incrementally moving forward with arguments based on new events.
This is temperamental conservatism as Burke would understand it. You peruse the existing intimations, to use Oakeshott's formula.

You guide what's emerging; you do not impose an ideological vision - like Paul Ryan's. Again this is why an old school conservative can see a lot of good in Obama.

Compare his handling of Iraq and Afghanistan with Bush's. Bush was pure ideology and achieved modest results only when he dropped the ideology and addressed reality in 2006.

Obama has been almost pure pragmatism - militarily and politically - on both. David Remnick says that Obama believes that "the price of getting too far ahead of the majority of the country would be politically ruinous and lead to the election of a conservative Republican."

At a fundraising dinner in 2008, in Montclair, New Jersey, Obama told one of his favorite stories about F.D.R. (He told the story apropos of the Israeli-Arab dispute, but it also pertains to gay marriage.) Obama recounted how when F.D.R. was confronted by the civil-rights leader A. Philip Randolph about the racial injustices in the country and the need for the President to use his powers and his bully pulpit, F.D.R. said he agreed but he would only take action when he was forced to do so by a popular movement. “Make me do it,” he told Randolph."

FDR said "make me do it". So is President Obama waiting for a liberal uprising? I know I am!

Thanks Shaw, you always calm me down, I appreciate that! If an old school conservative can see alot of good in Pres. Obama then he must be doing something right! One thing is certain, no matter how angry and frustrated I get, I will vote for Barack Obama in 2012. No Question about it!

I'm with you, Sue. There is not one republican that comes close to Obama. While I don't agree with everything Obama stands for, there is hardly one thing that republicans stand for that I agree with.

The choice is clear!

yes, Jerry, the choice IS very clear!

There have been liberal uprisings in Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

Unfortunatley the corporate media give more air time to a dozen tea suckers than a hundred thousand working class Americans.

Some "liberal media", huh?

Sue said...

you're right Dave. Yea that liberal media line is so lame. The teabaggers are dwindling but to watch and read about them you would think they make up 80% of the country! The Right wants us to believe the liberals are lazy, and won't fight for our freedoms being stolen from us by the Reichwingers, but that is absolutely false. The progressive movement is responsible for the election of Barack Obama and are working extremely hard to make sure those GOPpers get no where near the White House in 2012!
