A little background...

for Lisa and the Righties who claim Barack Obama came out of nowhere, a virtual nobody who was portrayed as a Messiah to steal the presidential election....

Harvard Law Reviewed

Kicking down doors.

The new president of the Harvard Law Review was somewhat taken aback by the deluge of media coverage that followed hard on the heels of his election. The New York Times ran a “First Black” headline, which probably won’t be the last time that label is affixed to Barack Obama. The twenty-eight-year-old law student says he wasn’t going to run for the office until a black friend talked him into it. “There’s a door to kick down,” the friend argued, “and you’re in a position to kick it down.” The job does give him a great forum, but there’s a trade-off. “I like to read novels, listen to Miles Davis,” he says. “I don’t get to do that anymore. I don’t get dates anymore.” Still, he’s philosophical, even briskly cheerful, about his lost leisure. And that’s because Barack Obama has a game plan: he wants to tackle the quagmire of America’s inner cities. Federal money alone won’t do it, he argues. The deeper problem is that “those communities are unorganized. We need to get more people planning.” For preparation, Harvard Law School is a “perfect place to examine how the power structure works. It gives you a certain language.” When he’s fluent, he’ll be able to translate the language of the streets (“which I can speak”) into the language of the Establishment, and vice versa. The sense of mission derives in part from his experiences in the Third World. He saw brutal poverty while growing up in Singapore [Editor’s note: We should have said Indonesia.] with his mother, an anthropologist, and his half-brothers and -sisters in Kenya still live hand to mouth at times. Obama says that his late father’s experience in the Kenyan government left him a broken and bitter man, and he responds warily to the assumption that he himself will run for office. “If I go into politics it should grow out of work I’ve done on the local level, not because I’m some media creation.” Though, as media creations go, he’d be a pretty good one.

My President, he's been around for a long time, a real mover and shaker, a real American who cares about ALL Americans...Do I think we are lucky to have him? You betcha I do!

Sue, Lisa and her pals come to conclusions first, then go looking for "false facts" to support them.

Your post will only infuriate them.

Thank you for this excellent historical and biographical snapshot of a great American. A pivotal moment for our great nation.

Anybody who was listening to Miles Dewey Davis III in the 1980s is okay in my book. That's about the same time frame as the one and only time I saw Miles play live. He never even faced the audience. It was all about the horn. Outdoor sound over water. Just a couple of years after his oh so sweet cover of Cyndi Lauper's Time after Time.

If any of you kids want to groove on the ultimate bitchenest acid jazz of all time, check out Miles Davis' 1974 double album Big Fun. My favorite tunes include the ripping guitar of John McLaughlin on Go Ahead John and the out-of-this-world, raw edgy keyboards of Joe Zawinul on Great Expectations.

So he should have run for office in Kenya if he was soooo concerned

Find me a paper he published(a requirement for that position)and then we will talk,or is that sealed too?
You know you won't see that leaked into the Sarah Pailin Movie or the Bush Movie "Death of a President"
Koolaid anyone?

Shaw Kenawe said...

Because Lisa is too eager to copy and paste rightwing talking points and too lazy to do research that would refute her "false facts," she wasn't able to find what I found in 2 minutes:

Obama's Lost Law Review Paper

But even if Mr. Obama had not written the above linked article, that would not have disqualified him from the head of the Harvard Law Review.

Editors of a law review are just that: editors. They select papers that have been authored by others, they edit them, and make comments. One does not necessarily have to be an author to be an editor, just as in a publishing house. Editors edit; writers write. And part of the skill of an editor is in the selection of pieces that they choose to edit, comment on, and publish.

In any event, Lisa, your coming here to bring up issues no one is interested in is a waste of our time.

You are still trying, futile as it is, to discredit this president with your silly, unfounded, and, may I add, ignorantly false comments.

Shaw Kenawe said...

"[A]fter [Obama] became president of the Review, he was under a lot of pressure to participate and lend his voice to those debates. And he did, I think, to some degree. But I would not have described him as a campus radical or a campus political leader. He was the president of the Harvard Law Review, the leader of that organization. But, in that role, his job was to manage, in essence, a publication, and the editors who brought it forth and to do a lot of close editing of academic legal articles. …

You don't become president of the Harvard Law Review, no matter how political, or how liberal the place is, by virtue of affirmative action, or by virtue of not being at the very top of your class in terms of legal ability. Barack was at the very top of his class in terms of legal ability. He had a first-class legal mind and, in my view, was selected to be president of the Review entirely on his merits.

... I never regarded him as kind of a racial special pleader, or a person looking for race-based benefits, either for himself or others. I think as a policy matter, he supported affirmative action and believed in the arguments for it. But unlike many people on the left, he was also willing to acknowledge that it had costs, and he could at least appreciate the arguments on the other side. ..." Bradford Bereson, Harvard Law,

Janny Scott The New York Times

"Apparently, while he was an editor of the Law Review, he was involved in the editing of a piece by Michael McConnell, who was a conservative constitutional law scholar who later was appointed by President George W. Bush to the Federal Court and was considered as a Supreme Court nominee, or was one of the people listed around the time of [Justice Samuel] Alito and [Chief Justice John] Roberts' appointments.

According to a professor at the University of Chicago, Douglas Baird, he got a call, or got a note, from Michael McConnell, who ... was definitely an alumnus of the University of Chicago Law School, saying, "I encountered this really remarkable, brilliant guy at Harvard Law Review when they were working on my piece, and you should have this guy on your radar." And so it was this very conservative legal scholar who brought Obama to the attention of the University of Chicago.

So Douglas Baird called Obama up at Harvard Law School -- I guess it must have been in his last year -- and said, "Do you have any interest in teaching?" Because, Baird said to me, "We rarely get that kind of unqualified endorsement, particularly from someone as well-known and respected as McConnell." ...

And Obama said, "Well, no, actually. What I want to do is write this book." This was at the moment where the newspaper articles and everything about his election had attracted the interest of publishers, and he'd gotten a book contract. So his first contact at the University of Chicago, which was where he later ended up teaching, was an attempt to just bring that guy there, since he was thought to be so sharp and worth following.

None of this matters to radical extremists who believe science, education and journalism are the same as liberalism, and liberalism is the same as communism.

They are a cult. No facts will be taken into consideration. We are looking at the mildest winter in anyones memory, and they still believe climate change is some conspiracy by evil scientists.

Yet these same dupes will declare there is no climate change when we get a snow storm.

Thanks for adding more pieces of our presidents past, Shaw. This is why the Right fears Barack Obama, his intelligence makes the Right look like 3rd graders in comparison. No matter what they try to say or do, they don't come close, and never will, to the brilliance of our president!

thanks fellow hippie FJ!

I know Dave, facts mean nothing to wingnuts. How do they explain tornadoes in the South in winter? God's wrath?

Shaw do you even read what you posted?

Senator Barack Obama refined his legal thinking, but left a scant paper trail. His name "doesn't" appear on any legal scholarship.

But an "unsigned" — and previously unattributed — 1990 article unearthed by Politico offers a glimpse at Obama's views on abortion policy and the law during his student days, and provides a rare addition to his body of work.

Lisa, why call him a fish?

Your inability to counter an argument posited in facts and evidence is no reason to get upset.

The fact is President Barack Obama, went to Harvard Law School, and he excelled.

Now I know some of the sites you frequent do not believe this and in fact ask for anyone who went to school with him to stand up and say he was there, so I will offer my brother in law up for that.

You see my brother in law is a Justice Department Lawyer, since the Bush Admin, who was a classmate of Barack Obama, who was pretty disappointed that Obama was elected Editor [not writer] of Law Review because he wanted that honor.

Let me know if you want his name.

Sue, nice post, but I am sure you photoshopped the picture though...

jajaja

I f he did so well Dave the media would be going out of their way to show all his achievements there don't you think? After all if they can prove is a US citizen this should be a cake walk.

Lisa said " shut up you dumb Pollack", I guess she was talking to Sam...but then she deleted it when Dave asked her why she called him a fish! Bwahaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaa!!! Dave I'm LOL!!

Lisa why do you feel the media has to harp on Barack Obamas college years? For God's sake the man has been president for almost 4 years and is about to be elected to his second term!! Get a life sweetie!!

Lisa said...

Why not Sue they harp on everything else?

I know I spelled that wrong I meant "dumb Polak"

Shaw Kenawe said...

Sue, Lisa is still upset that Mr. Obama won the presidency, and can't find anything to complain about that stands up to the facts. So she brought up this nonsense about his Harvard Law School years, and still, with evidence in front of her by people who actually knew him during those years, refuses to accept those facts.

Reality and facts are not her strong suit.

A conservative friend on FB posted this piece of crap....http://www.theblaze.com/stories/filmmaker-steve-bannon-breitbarts-tapes-of-obamas-college-years-to-be-released-in-7-to-10-days/

“I have videos, this election we’re going to vet him,” new media mogul Andrew Breitbart proclaimed at this year’s CPAC event.

Breitbart was, of course, referring to clips that allegedly show President Barack Obama during his college days — videos that the media leader claimed would show “why racial division and class warfare are central to what hope and change was sold in 2008.”

These tapes, which have inspired conspiracy theories surrounding what led to Breitbart’s death on Thursday of natural causes at the age of 43, are now purportedly going to be released (Glenn Beck has strongly cautioned viewers against jumping to conclusions connecting the tapes to Breitbart’s death).

On Thursday evening, Steve Bannon, a writer and documentary filmmaker (“The Undefeated”), told FOX News‘ Sean Hannity that Breitbart’s company will release the mysterious Obama Harvard tapes within seven to 10 days.

Steve Bannon Says Breitbarts Obama Colleges Tapes to Be ReleasedAfter Hannity brought up the tapes that Breitbart said “would change this election,” Bannon gave more information regarding when the public can expect to see them.

“There‘s a set of tapes and we’re going through it,” Bannon announced. “The staff…the guys are going through a series of tapes of President Obama at Harvard and…we’ll come back to you in a week or two and show them here on the Hannity show.”

“In one week, we’ll have these tapes?,” Hannity asked.

Bannon confirmed that they should be ready for release in a week to 10 days.

We need to always associate Rush Limbaugh with the GOP. He is their darling, afterall, and GOP pols soil their undies if Rush smells any disloyalty from them.

I think it's great that the GOP so willingly associates itself with and embracess a once illegal drug abuser, a guy who lost his job with ESPN for his racist remarks, and who now attacks young women on his radio show, calling them sluts and whores, and who admits that he'd like to watch women who get coverage for contraceptives post videos of themselves having sex on YouTube.

This is who the GOP and the GOP politicians admire!

A raging swine! LOL!

I thought the bottom of the cesspool was as low as Rush could go, but the little worm proves to us each day that he can find deeper and deeper slime holes to descend into.

You go Rush! And keep that association going with the GOP!

those advertisers are going to lose alot more that a slot on Limbaugh's' show.

You don't think Obama paid off constituents for votes and used tax payer money to do it no less.
I bet you came running to Laura Ingraham defense when Ed Shultz called her a slut. The difference is the left says it they mean it,but Rush does it just to get under your thin skin.

yes Lisa, liberals are jealous of a hatemongers money....

Take notice, Lisa does not defend Sandra Fluke, she defends Limpy...so typical of the hate coming from the Right. Their hate is eating them alive, Look what it did to Breitbart!

Dave Miller said...

Lisa, you are right in that it was wrong for Schultz and Maher to use language like that.

I for one do not believe that this type of language has any place in a civil society, especially from the airwaves.

That being said, Maher is not a news commentator, like Schultz and Limbaugh. So let's look at those two situations.

Both of these men used offensive language on the public, free airwaves. And then what happened?

WIthin days, Limbaugh had doubled down and defended calling the woman a slut. Schultz was suspended from his program and then came on the air and made a personal apology, in his own voice. He did not mail it in as Limbaugh did.

Regarding Maher, again he is a comic, but for me that does give him an excuse to debase another individual. But perhaps the difference here is that to see his show, you have to pay for the privilege, or punishment, depending on your point of view.

Perhaps a better example might be David Letterman, who, like Schultz and Limbaugh is also on the public/free airwaves.

He wrongly maligned Sarah Palin in his show and then came on the air to apologize personally, much like Schultz.

Both Letterman and Schultz publicly acknowledged, in their own voice, on their own shows, that they were wrong.

And Limbaugh? I'll let you and other conservatives determine whether his apology matches the level of contrition of either Letterman or Schultz.

Lisa, try sticking to the post. When you get angry, or do not like the tone of a post, rather than bring facts and logic to the table, you react and bring in other non related issues.

Really, regardless of how much any Dem might get away with, the subject of this post was how Rush Limbaugh was wrong.

Are to believe from your comments that you believe it was alright to use that type of language to describe another woman?

In all of your comments on other blogs touching on this subject, you've yet to say Limbaugh was wrong.

Was he? And if he was, why has the GOP leadership be fairly silent in condemning his language and actions?
