Every time I drive by the Mormon temple in the San Diego community of University City, I make a little cross with my fingers. It's this horrible, gleaming-white, sparkly stucco on styrofoam pre-fab, 200-foot tall gothic monstrosity. They actually opened it to the public when it was first built in the early 1990s. I guess they thought it might win converts. Sometimes I say, "I bind you in the name of Jesus Christ! You have no power here!" That's all you have to say. Demons flee. It always makes me think of the flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz."
But everybody knows I'm fucking nuts!

Good friend of mine in America was a Mormon missionary in his youth.
Voted Republican for a lot of his life.
He’s now an atheist and active member of Occupy. WAY more acid on the subject of religion than I am, being someone who was raised in it and is still recovering from its assaults on common sense and ethics.
He’s lived all over the States but, wherever he goes, sooner or later the Mormon men in black show up demanding money.

The live and let live thing is my reflex reaction… but the rest of us DON’T get left in peace.
If you drill down far enough, most of the bile and irrationality of the Right comes from attachment to absurd religious ideas and almost always it’s the Abrahamic faiths. If they are not persecuting the rest of us for not being just like them…. then they are having bloody inter-faith collisions that suck the rest of us in.
Religious doctrine will insist on the logical equivalent of 2+2=5 and then hate our guts for pointing out that 2+2 does not equal 5. People will get in cars powered by things that took millions of years to percolate to drive to church to learn that the universe is 6000 years old. It laughs at climate change and then tells you we got kicked out of paradise because a snake gave an apple to a woman.
