rethuglicans say America can't afford $250 for seniors...two-hundred and fifty dollars!!!

Another typical day in the life a Rethuglican. Even after President Obama gave them what they wanted in the tax cut extensions, the rethuglicans came back today and stopped the Democrats efforts to give an eeeensy teeensy weeeensy $250.00 check to seniors, Social Security recipients who will face 2 years now without a cost of living increase. Well, hell sure Obama and dems urged Congress to approve this, saying seniors are facing hardship without their increases. I guess that's all the rethugs had to hear before throwing down the gavel!  NO MORE INCREASES FOR YOU!!  OFF with their heads, Damn it! Those damn lazy seniors, how dare they say they need a cost of living increase EVERY YEAR!!  Don't they know we have a deficit problem? Don't they know we need to extend tax cuts to the filthy rich so it can trickle down?? How ungrateful of those seniors, they got a SIGNIFICANT increase in '09!!
I'm gonna check with my poor elderly mother tomorrow incase I need to make a correction, but I think she got $16.00. That my friends is sixteen dollars a month raise. Wow stop the presses..... So because of this astronomical raise, unfortunately the resluglicans opposed another raise this year and next.  I guess that makes them deficit hawks. I think it makes them chicken livers I want to feed to my cats...

The measure was brought up under a fast-track procedure in the House that required a two-thirds majority for passage. The 254-153 vote in favor of the bill fell short of that.Twenty-six Republicans voted for the bill, while 141 opposed it. Democrats were in favor, 228-12.

No to $250 for seniors and yes to $100,000 for millionaires. Lousy fuckers!

Par for the course. People had might as well start accepting that the President is a right winger. It appears, from his voting record, that he has been for some time.

I wrote a post on him in October of 2007 explaining my misgivings, and then ignored my own writings. Christ.

I'm assuming you refer to his voting record as a US Senator?

Senator Barack Obama had the MOST liberal voting record of any senator in 2007.

When he was elected president he repeated many times that he was the president of ALL Americans, not just liberal Americans. He moved to the center, as did Clinton, as do most presidents.

Despite what more than a few liberals say about Mr. Obama, he is NOT a Republican. The Republicans hate him and what they consider his liberal/leftist policies.

We see in him our frustrations and pin labels on him that make us feel justified in wanting to abandon him.

He is not a socialist, marxist, communist, fascist, Kenyan, Muslim, Republican.

But you're OK with the 500 billion cut in Medicare?

Why are you against cost savings Lisa? Unless of course they cost rich republican pharmaceutical companies and the like. Then I understand your lamblike obedience to your masters. Dick Cheney has a pat on the head for you.

And I suppose Republicans consider extending tax cuts for the rich a savings?

I am wobbly and as confused as I was last year during the HC debates. No I am not 100% behind the presidents decision. I believe the rethuglicans are playing Obama like a fiddle. I hope Pelosi and the House make the changes to the bill we can be comfortable with. Look at the '08 clips of Obama and what he said while campaigning about the tax cuts to the rich expiring. Look at the numbers, those who agreed with him in the red states, those who voted for him based on his promises to end the Bush policies that brought our economy to it's knees. Yes I'm wobbling tonight because the thugs are game playing, President Obama has even started to echo the thug talking points saying these tax cut extensions to the rich will spur job growth. I'm so confused, I don't even know who to believe or trust anymore.

Tax cuts for the rich DO spur job growth. HOWEVER, if you give a $100000 tax cut to a rich person, they will save some and spend some. Say they spend half of it. $50,000 goes back into the economy creating $50,000 worth of demand.

Spread that same $100,000 at $1000 per person to 100 people unemployed or near the poverty level and they will spend 100% of it. The total $100,000 will go back into the economy producing a larger increase in demand and hence spurring a greater job growth.

The impact of the deficit is the same, $100,000, but the effect on job growth is much greater when the money is put to use at the bottom of the food chain instead of the top of the food chain.

I put this on FB. Sheria is a sharp lady and here is a point by point analysis. I strongly urge folks to link to it - or cut and paste to it as the case may be.

There is no end to their greed and selfishness! They also voted down the bill to help 9/11 responders. Not enough money, they say...But no taxes for the millionnaires? That's important!

I sure could have used that $250, but I didn’t plan my “boojay” (budget) around it.

The $250 is a stimulus payment. The COLA raise is under the auspices of public administration and is calculated on the Consumer Price Index – the price of goods excluding gasoline and food. In times of inflation, the raise increases. (The highest COLA raise in recent years was during the Clinton administration.) In the current economy, it is nonexistent. Congress doesn’t calculate the COLA. Congresss does have the power to cut it out altogether, and that’s a real worry for seniors whose only income is their SS checks.

Shaw, that doesn't really change my point. Look at the votes that mattered, on things like war funding. He's been a pretty reliable tool of the Plutocracy for some time now.

"Liberal" doesn't have the meaning for the MSM that it has for me, or even you, in all likelihood.

Sanders plugging Arianna Huffington's book on the Senate floor for nearly 9 hours was classic. Give him credit, he went through with it.
