Can we stomach another impeachment trial??

Bachmann: If GOP wins the House, 'all we should do is issue subpoenas'.

BachmannSpeechYesterday, Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) spoke to the GOP Youth Convention in Washington. One attendee asked Bachmann about what the Republicans will do if they win back the House:
QUESTION: I might be putting the cart before the horse here, but assuming the Republicans win the House back this next cycle, how do you feel about the chances for a little oversight and a little accountability now that the Republicans would have the subpoena power? How aggressive do you think?
BACHMANN: Well I think that’s all we should do. I think all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another and expose all the nonsense that has gone on. And it’s very important when we come back that we have constitutional conservative leadership, because the American people’s patience is about this big. [...]
And this is the year, this is it. All of our chips are on November. If we don’t get it back and then starve the beast, the House – we have the power of the purse – so we can starve Obamacare, we don’t have to fund any of these programs. And that’s exactly what we need to do: defund all of this nonsense and then unwind it.
Steve Benen, Political Animal: July 23, 2010
INVESTIGATING IS EASIER THAN GOVERNING.... The political world may not fully appreciate just how ugly it might be next year.
To be sure, it was farcical on the Hill in the mid- to late-'90s. Rep. Dan Burton (R) of Indiana and his House committee on administrative oversight launched pointless investigations into every wild-eyed Clinton-related accusation unhinged activists could manufacture.
And I mean "every" quite literally. In one instance, Burton held hearings -- for 10 days -- on the Clintons' Christmas card list. In another, Burton fired a bullet into a "head-like object" -- reportedly a melon -- in his backyard to test his conspiracy theories about Vince Foster. Over the last six years of Bill Clinton's presidency, Burton's committee unilaterally issued 1,052 subpoenas -- that's not a typo -- to investigate baseless allegations of misconduct. That translates to an average of a politically-inspired subpoena every other day for six consecutive years, including weekends, holidays, and congressional recesses.
A Republican House majority in the next Congress would likely take this even further. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has already made clear that he intends to make Burton look like a meek, submissive toady, leaving "corporate America" alone, so he can attack the White House relentlessly.
For that matter, let's also not forget that some Republicans, including two members of Congress, have raised the specter of presidential impeachment once there's a GOP majority. One of them is Bachmann -- who thinks "all" Republicans should do in the next Congress is launch witch hunts.
As Paul Krugman noted recently, "[W]e'll be having hearings over accusations of corruption on the part of Michelle Obama's hairdresser, janitors at the Treasury, and Larry Summers's doctor's dog."
If this seems like a joke, now would be a good time to adjust your expectations.

Are you ready for it? Let's pray the GOP loses in 2010 because it will be a circus, you can bet your bippy it will! Bachmann is not pulling any punches, there will be subpoenas flying around Washington like we have never seen before. It'll make the Clinton impeachment look like a schoolyard prank! We can only hope the republican party destroys itself or we are doomed to repeat the past. There really is no stopping the evil train wreck called the republican party...

It just shows you that the republicans have no interest in governing. They are not putting forth new ideas or programs to improve the US. All they want to do is give money to the rich (tax breaks), wage war (defense spending), and destroy government by bringing it to a halt.

They came close to destroying it under Bush. The republicans are much more dangerous to this country than Al-Qeada could ever wish to be.

Jerry,
Ditto
Of course we could play the game. There are all sorts of investigations against the Republicans that could be launched. Bush still has court rulings coming down against him, but that's not how I want my government to spend the next 10 years. I suppose the people would get a kick out of it, so it will probably happen.

This is exactly what I have been talking about... If the GOPers take back the House, you can be assured this will happen. Investigations and eventual Impeachment of the President. I really fear for the country if this happens. The GOPers have no morals and would manufacture evidence to try to push this agenda... Remember what just happened to ACORN, Van Jones, and now Shirley Sherrod. Not a one guilty of a thing, yet the right painted them as bad and everyone and I do mean everyone jumped on the bandwagon to fire them or investigate them.

I really fear for our country too if the thugs gain control. I believe the majority of the country will NOT find this amusing, all the wasted time and effort to oust a legitimately elected president during very hard times. We are not just sitting around with nothing else to worry about, we have serious problems and our president is TRYING to right the wrongs from the Bush era. I just don't think this country will stand for the thug antics this time around.

The right lives for this. All fabricated by fox, limbo and the rest.

You said it and I agree.

Well... If the republicans win this time around, conventional, non-partisan wisdom aside...I guess it's all over! I mean, what the hell is left? But take heart dear friends. IMHO...

They won't gain in the Senate. Fiorina's candidacy will mean nothing. Paul will go down quietly. Any seats they pick up in the house will likely be balanced partially by lost seats.

It would be nice to see Bachmann lose her seat! One can hope.

Thanks for the laugh Sue!

I agree, Sue!

OK, I don't agree with all the slobbery badmouthing in the comments, as if this is only a Republican thing. Aren't these the same people who scream for Cheney to be prosecuted, waterboarded, killed, etc?

I agree with the central principle: Current regimes investigating former regimes has to stop now.

This is what they do in the third world. I've lived in places where this goes on all the time. I was in Ecuador when one former president had to smuggle himself out in the trunk of a car. God save us from that!

This is what happens when the government is wedded to corporate America and they have power over everything. Billions are made every year off the backs of the taxpayers.

Our government has turned into a multi-trillion dollar criminal enterprise, which is why the demicans and republicrats fight and spend billions trying to hold on to power.

Sue and readers: You're seeing clearly out of one eye. Open the other one.

Well, I'm not as perssimistic as the rest of you. I don't think in this time of a poor economy that people are going to go for all these money wasting investigations over virtually nothing. Bachman is doing the same thing that Palin is doing - talking too much and proving what an idiot she is each time she opens her mouth.

There are a few things we can do to ensure that these yahoos don't control the House or the Senate: volunteer, write letters and emails (and send them), and VOTE.

Playing hardball has not been a strongpoint of this Administration. I'm disappointed Rahm for this reason. The White House controls the Justice Dept. For every subpoena Congressional republicans deliver, Eric Holder needs to deliver ten to Bachman and her ilk.

Does anyone really think John Boner wants to be forced to disclose how much and who is paying for his tanning salon treatments?

Onefly the GOP is armed and ready, I just hope the voters kill their chances for this thrill of a lifetime.

Junior I'm not sure what you're saying. You don't take the GOP seriously? Yes it would be MY thrill of a lifetime to see Bachmann slaughtered by the voters!

SF, the difference between Obama being impeached and Cheney waterboarded is Cheney is actually guilty of something! What is Obama guilty of except the GOP disagree with his politics therefore they don't want him in office anymore. Isn't that a wee bit immature cry baby stuff??

Sue said...

Leslie I do agree, I don't think the people will stand for these acts of nonsense, there is nothing to find in a subpoena in my opinion. Can you imagine them bringing Obama to trial for this birth certificate scandal? How embarrassing!

Truth wouldn't it be fun to see the White House in fighting mode and destroy the GOP?? It's almost worth letting them win and proceed with these subpoenas!

I'm strongly, strongly recommending that people read Sheria's post on Progressive Eruptions - if you haven't already read it on The Swash Zone. Be sure to read the comments as well.

As you recall Cheney was NOT prosecuted. Even though he (and numerous bush administration officials) should have been. Silverfiddle, I fail to see how "current regimes investigating former regimes" can "stop now" when Democrats don't do it! Even when it is obvious that war crimes have been committed!

Well hell. I suppose this beats the hell out of doing what they're elected and contracted by the Constitution to do - govern

Bachman is a friging nut job that barely won re-election last time around. She's up again in 2010 so I'm thinking the best thing to do is donate all that you can to her opponent be it a libertarian or a democrat. There is power in numbers.

And Bachman is batshit looney! Love the post Sue XOXOXOX

like Tom pointed out on the previous post w, dems are too damn nice! Dickless and Co. should be in jail!

They have to do anything but govern Bob, because they just don't know how! :-)

Mat! So great to see you, I gotta get my butt over to see you too! Don't be a stranger, and YES Bachmann MUST GO or government is headed to hell in a handbasket...

These idiots, the Bachmann types and the rest, are just that. They are idiots. There will be no impeachments for a variety of reasons with the most important being they have to win the majority first and I don't see that happening.

Infidel753 said...

Bachmann's latest ravings will do no good for the electoral chances of Republicans, especially herself -- among those voters who are actually paying attention to politics. Unfortunately that's probably a pretty small number of people this far before the election.

Cheney actually committed a war crime: torture.

Name one crime Obama has committed.

how could we know he's protectd like Fort Knox.

Dick Cheney ate aborted fetuses Lisa. He called them "Soylent Veal." But we won't hear about that because Justice Roberts had all records concerning Cheney destroyed.

Well, Lisa, I see you are a proponent of republican justice -- guilty until proven innocent.

Leslie Parsley said...

"how could we know.." well, if you don't know, don't say anything.

Apparently you didn't read the rest of that article. Anyway, Dean has never been a strength in the Democratic party and he is no longer chairman of the DNC, just as Mr. Steele will shortly cease to be chair of the RNC.

it will make the Clinton's impeachment look like a school yard prank, because comparatively Slick Willie was just a beginner...he was a lying philanderer, not a bald faced marxist bent on our nation's destruction.

I think Deans somewhat endorsement of Gingrich is like reverse psychology. We all know the guy could never beat Obama, so lets help a loser get the nomination sorta thinking. Make sense?? If not then WTF is wrong with Howard Dean??

Flying Junior said...

Hey Silverfish.

It was Obama and Pelosi who said impeaching/prosecuting Bush was out. That was against a fairly considerable outcry. So...

I would say that makes you inaccurate, to be generous.

Flying Junior said...

Current regimes investigating former regimes has to stop now.

Besides which, you're to stupid to take seriously. The regime meme was invented by Rush as a way to discredit the Obama administration. As a loyal Kool-Aid drinker, you're not supposed to call the Bush presidency a regime. Fuckin' duh.

You've got a helluva nerve calling Obama "previous." He's far from a lame duck. Good luck with Palin/Gingrich/Romney or whoever the hell you want to put up for the republican version of "change."

Leslie Parsley said...

KOOK: The government oughta round you up with all the other kooks and put you behind barbed wire.

Leslie, you too!

It was Obama and Pelosi who said impeaching/prosecuting Bush was out.

Maybe because they would have lost on facts that the Geneva Convention does not apply to non-uniformed enemies.
Something everyone is well aware of except the few who just can't bring themselves to admit it.

Leslie Parsley said...

Lisa - why the heck are you bringing up the Geneva Coventions? They (4 treaties) have nothing to do with impeachment and everything to do with POWs. In fact, a Swiss fellow got the first one going in 1865 and out of it came the Red Cross.

You remember Benjamin Franklin don't you? One of our Founding Fathers, you know. He said it's better to keep your mouth shut and show no ignorance than to open it and leave no doubt.

Jolly Roger said...

So silverfiddle doesn't think that clear violations of the Geneva Conventions should be treated as the crimes they are. And lisa thinks that Obama MUST HAVE done something, but he's so "covered up" we'll never know about it.

And the damn fools wonder why I ridicule them. How can I do otherwise?
