I heard some of Obama's press conference this morning. To his credit, the only cuts to Medicare he hinted at were what he termed "means testing." I don't have any problem with that. But he did mention raising the Social Security retirement age again. He should know, just from what Michelle's father went through, just how tough it can be to try to stick it out at work as old age starts to creep in. All of a sudden, eight hours turns into a pretty long haul. Five days can turn into an ordeal. He can't really be trying to bring back the "work until you drop dead" mentality???
And that's why I've always said that I', comfortable with them taking the first hit. The Klanbaggers allowed themselves to be bused from venue to venue, vowing to die in order to protect health insurer profits. And then they allowed themselves to be bused to the polls, and stuck us PRECISELY in the predicament we find ourselves in.
They did this. Let them suffer the consequences.
Thom Hartmann is one of my favorites. He has a big hammer and hits the nail squarely on the head almost every time.
His radio program is tops. He is one of the only radio talk hosts on either the left or the right that routinely debates the other side. In fact, the best way to get bumped to the top of the call-in list is to say you disagree with something he said.
Good exposé. The whole deficit crisis is an artificial problem manufactured by decades of tax-cutting in the first place, but it's worth reminding people of when the bad guys have used the same panic stories we're hearing today against specific programs in the past.
Don't be too quick to judge the entitlement cuts Obama is offering until we know all the details. There are ways of making spending cuts sound much bigger than they really are. For example, the biggest cuts may be projected for several years down the road, which means they likely won't happen at all, since future sessions of Congress are not bound by what's voted on today. The important thing right now is to stop big immediate cuts that would throw the country into a full-blown depression.
As Wall Street tells the Republicans in ever-harsher terms to quit playing chicken with the debt ceiling, they're looking for a way to retreat, as McConnell's recent proposal shows. If Obama offer them cuts that sound much bigger than they are, so they have something (however illusory) to show the raving teabaggers for their efforts, that might make it easier for them to save face while backing down. That makes it more likely that they will back down, which is the important thing.
I agree Infidel. My full trust is in the president, I believe he is the smartest man in the room and in the end we will not be disappointed. The GOPers thought Obama would cave a
long time ago, they are flustered and scared and don't know what their next move is at this point...my opinion of course! LOL
FJ, it's all talk at this point, if there are cuts it will not affect benefits or age. I know SS and Medicare are important subjects for Obama, he won't hurt seniors, that is not who he is.
JR, I said in my old comment here that got deleted that I have found some great friends on FB who are 100% supportive of Pres. Obama, they are positive in their discussions, are hopeful for the future, some say Obama's second term will be quite different from his first and we will be very pleased with his agenda. It feels really good to think positive and truly look into the mans heart and trust he has OUR best interests in mind when he is hard at work. This is a man with high intelligence and I trust him. He scares the shit out of the GOP what could be better than that? LOL! Always remember, NO president has ever given his party 100% of what they demanded, some hard lefties are being unreasonable because they react before the whole story is out. I know for me, I feel more relaxed and happier this way! :-). You are a good friend JR, I hope you stay with me, even through the lovefest postings! LOL
It's refreshing to hear intelligence isn't it Jerry? So much different from Beck's chalkboards! I've had so much going on since I posted that video that I haven't taken the time to sit quietly and listen to the whole thing. Today I can relax and do that!
I'll give you one medicare "cut" that the president can offer the klanservitaves.
Re-enact Medicare Part D so that the US government is ALLOWED to negotiate the LOWEST price for prescription drugs in Medicare Part D, just like the US Government is allowed to do in the VA health care.
That would LOWER the cost for both the Government and Seniors with out raising taxes.
A win-win, unless your a teabaggin' foole frontin' for the Koch sucking GOPers. Then they scream bloody hell cause the poor poor pitiful medical-mafia big Pharmacy corps would take a hit in their fat wallet.
Which is what the republiscum are all about any way, protecting the greediest more corrupt people in the country, IE (CEO's and Wall Street scam artists) those who take more then the rest and still scream how bad off they are.
The republiscum set up Medicare Part D to enrich the drug dealing corps, instead of how the VA does it, force the lowest price for massive purchases, like most corps in the private sector always demand.
