President Barack Obama spoke tonight.....

Our President spoke at the memorial service in Arizona for the victims of Saturdays shooting rampage. His words were comforting to the families and to all Americans...

He spoke with elegance and grace..... he has a great love for our country and the people, it showed tonight....he spoke about the victims, about the heros, and about those who are recovering ... Gabrielle Giffords opened her eyes for the first time today!

He showed me tonight why I am proud to have Barack Obama as my president. Beautifully done Mr. President, Beautifully done....

President Obama gave an A+ speech tonight! Not only did the speech cover the tragedy itself, it also touched on the aftermath of the political back and forth that has taken place. The president had to walk a fine line and he handled the situation deftly.

I agree with you on this one, Sue. The President indeed gave a magnificent speech. I can only hope that everybody, left and right, was listening. And when I say listening, I mean, REALLY listening.

you're right Malcolm. It was beautifully done. I can't imagine ANYONE criticizing our president tonight.

It was a speech well done. Of course he has writers. They all have writers. But his delivery was right on.

Very Presidential.

Very Impressive.

Well said.

And meaningful also.

The President gave a wonderfully crafted and delivered speech, and spoke to us like a preacher without being preachy.

Well done by Mr Obama, and to all who spoke at the event.

One little sidebar....John Boehner, wherever you are, you should have relegated the fundraiser tonight for the RNC to Eric Cantor and been in Tuscon.

It would have shown bi-partisan solidarity.....and being there was the right thing to do. He missed a big opportunity to show the American people that he could rise beyond politics as usual.

I was so glad that I was off of work to hear this. I just parked my car and listened to the whole thing. It was very helpful to hear something positive being said.

I just wish that people had been asked not to cheer and applaud. That took away from the solemnity. For me it was very out of place.

"The president should've put an end to that."

President Obama was a guest of the University.

The University president should have instructed his students in the correct decorum for the occasion.

But I also saw the students' response as a release from the agonizing days of grief and depression that followed the shootings.

President Obama's speech was healing and perfect for the occasion.

It wasn't a funeral, and I thought that the students were showing their love and respect for everyone there.
I used a box of kleenex during the whole thing, but felt that President Obama did a good job of comforthing all of us.

Sue: Although I watched most of the memorial on MSNBC, I switched over to Fox to hear the reaction of their analysts. They had on Charles Krauthammer, Chris Wallace, and Brit Hume. Surprisingly, all of them gave President Obama's speech positive reviews. The only criticism any of them could come up with was when Chris said the speech wasn't brief in comparison to Reagan's after the Challenger explosion and Clinton's in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing. Chris is reaching, esp. when you consider everything the president had to cover in the speech (the tragedy itself, the people who lost their lives, the political back and forth over the past few days, etc.).

Chris' dig was minor in comparison to what I've read on some of the forums. For some, there is no cure for ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome).

Reagans televised speech to the people after the tragedy was brief because the setting was different. President Obama was at a memorial service attended by thousands, he was speaking to those people as well as a TV audience. I do the same thing Malcolm, tune into Fox to hear the drivel, but yes, those on Scarboroughs show today had all positive things to say. The bloggers could learn a few things from the smart conservatives left in their party.

you're right about Boehner, Hugh, bad move on his part!

FJ, like some said, it was not a funeral so the applause was fine with me. A memorial to bring a face and a name to the deceased, and to honor the heros, to acknowledge the families and to pray for those still healing, was all a celebration, and being happy is a nice change from the terrible sadness and pain all have been feeling.

Thanks Shaw and skylark, well said too!
